Default Anybody have a dumbies guide to setting timeing?

And I do mean DUMBIES! :smash: Like what is optimum timing? How do you achieve it? From putting the dist in to adjusting with a light. What do terms like 36 degrees total timing mean? Etc, etc, etc As basic as my little mind can comprehend. :yesnod:

In addition to the paper referenced in the previous post, I can also e-mail you a paper on installation - it includes photos. Let me know if you need it...

I just used this and it worked a treat!

Before you start you need to get an adjustable timing light. Well worth the money. $70 at Sears.

In short:
Warm up car.
Disconnect vaccumn line to distributor.
Rev engine to 3000RPM (or was it 2500... see Lars Paper)
Check timing. Adjust distributor till engine starts pinging (you will know!) then back of a bit.
Back of throttle and check timing again. Should be around 12-13 degrees or so.
Turn engine off.
Put Vaccumn line back on.

There is much more detail in LARS paper. He knows his stuff, above is just part of it.

Good luck.

Before you start you need to get an adjustable timing light. Well worth the money. $70 at Sears.
Or if you're cheap, you can simply take as accurate a measurement as you can of the circumference of the balancer and divide that number by 10 (for a small block, not sure what total timing advance should be on a big block) and measure that distance clockwise from the 0 degree mark and make a new mark. That will be (if divided by 10) the 36 degree mark... Lars's paper explains this as well I believe. It's a way clever way of doing it and in some ways is more desirable than using an advance timing light.

Lars,

I would really like to get a copy of this paper if you don't mind sending it to me.

Thanks
