Default [RANT] Parking brake shoes

Who in the wild world of sports designed these mother-flapping emergency brakes and what were they thinking? It just took me 3 hours to replace the shoes on one side. I even built a little clip to hold the retainer springs down while I stabbed the post through. It still took five hands and six tools, and don't even get me started on that !~#$^* top spring. I'd like to get my hands on that GM "engineer" right now. He'd look like six miles of dirt road when I got through with him. :cuss :cuss :cuss :cuss :cuss

Edited for obvious reasons. :banghead:

I know how ya feel. I rebuilt mine last winter. I think I went through a whole box of dental floss, using it to compress the springs. And then, one time the floss failed when I was carrying the spring assembly to the car and the retainer on the spring shot off and was lost. It's a good idea to put the parking brake inside the rotor, but the design sucks.

It presents some interesting problems. It seems like I am always fishing parts in somewhere on this car. My pins and retainer were badly rusted and needed replacement. ( The retainer at the top was gone!) Since I was not doing the wheel bearings i could not remove the bolt for the retainer. I ended up sloting that so i could push it over the bolt and clamp it in. For the retaining pins i loosened the 4 bolts holding the back plate and forced in the new stainless pin from behind. keep in mind these things are designed for ease of assembly not service.
