Default Side Pipes on a 79?

I want to put side pipes on my 79. I have a muffler shop that will install and add the cats as long as I find something that will fit. I have been looking on the Internet, but have not found anyone selling side pipes for a 79. Help. Does anyone know of a place that sells side pipes for a 79? I have heard that factory pipes off a 74 will fit. Is that true? Has anyone put side pipes ont their 79? Any pros/cons you would like to share?

Thanks,

Jeff

The only factory sidepipes for a C3 is from a 69. They will fit any year C3. I have a set of GM NOS original 69 pipes with fiberglass covers on my 79. A muffler shop should have no problem putting cats in them.

I went with the Hooker sidepipes on my 78 vette. There are a bunch of people here with 78-82 vettes with sidepipes.

Those are a pretty penny these days. Figure about $2500 for the pipes, repro covers and converters.

I found generic chrome side pipes in different lengths in the JC Whitney catalog. I don't know if this is what type you are looking for, but take a look. :flag

Jeff,
I also recommend the Hooker Header & Sidepipes.
Pros - Better performance, aggressive look/sound.
Cons - Price, Leg burns
From my experience & what I've read, Hookers fit the later C3s without any body/rocker panel cutting or modification.
Some webites only list sidepipes to '75 bcause of emission issues, but most sidepipes for C3's will fit them all. Check the Eckler's & Summit websites for different sidepipes & prices.

:iagree:

I put on this set of Hooker Super Competition Side Pipes and Headers. i think the whole deal, gaskets and all cost me about $1200. Now, this has no Cats to speak of and barely a muffler. I do recommend the pipes for the look and the sounds, but as always there are down sides. It is very difficult to keep the pipes shined and I do have some minor surface rust showing in the header twist just after 3 years. Oh yeah, and the leg burns. Did it once, and that all it took me to realize never to do that again.
