Default 1980 corvette engine removal

I was told that the engine and trans had to be taken out together, However I refuse to believe this. Can any of you guys give me the facts. I really dont want to remove both. I just want to pull the engine. I have a 99 and never worked on one of these. Thanks, JOHN :conehead :seeya

What trans? If manual the answer is most likely - it is easier to do both and besides give you a change to tune up the clutch assy and throwout bearing.

On an auto - not needed, the alignment dowels work to align fine going back in. This is IMO having pulled both types.

Pulled mine out twice by itself. It is an automatic and it was rather an easy process.

Don't get anymore advice from that person, you can take it out without the tranny.

Just noticed your cam, .580 lift with 224 deg duration ? What rocker arm ration is this, I just bought a CC solid roller and I have to get into the 240's duration to get that lift at 1.5 :1. :D

:iagree:

However, on my 1980, I pulled the engine and AT together as both needed repair.

You can do it either way.

I have removed the engine from the car without the tranny out of my 79 so many times(for dumb mistakes {buying the wrong flex plate}, deciding on a whim to repaint the engine yellow once I decided blue was ugly, buying a replacemant oil pan) that I can do it in my sleep and I have a 1 car garage with very little space. Will be firing this thing up at the end of next month. I'm on a VERY TIGHT budget. Yes you definitely can pull the engine without the tranny.

Remove all the peripherals. Undo the motor mounts. undo the bellhousing bolts. Support the trans on a jack and lift the engine out with a chain and rented hoist. It is pretty EASY to do.

Sorry I did not mention in my sig that my car is 99 c5. That is why the cam is a 224, 581.
