Nice car, and I'm sure it is STUPID fast, but I wonder whether a clone could be built for less $$$, especially as there are a lot of things on this car that are not factory ZL-1 (Richmond box, diff cooler, electrice fuel pumps, roll bars, etc.)

Still, I wouldn't whine if it found its way into my driveway, and at least the guy is not trying to pass it off as something it is not.

That's the thing with building your own. You want no front spoiler? No stripe? No problem? Big rear wing and a fart-pipe? I guess it is do-able.

I guess that's why customs sell for less money, all things being equal, than factory-restos.

I guess I don't get it. For that money I would far, far rather have a factory correct L-88 (and $50K or more still in my pocket). Why go to all that trouble to make it look kind of like a real ZL1? No one who doesn't know about the ZL1 (most non C3 people) would know what that meant, and anyone who did know would know instantly from the pipes, spoiler, wheels, etc. that it's not a real ZL1. Makes no sense to me.

I had considered putting a pace car spoiler on my 69, as others have already said, I think I will now pass. It just doesn't do it for me with chrome bumpers. I probably wouldn't mind so much if it was a solid color, preferably black.

Otherwise, I really appreciate what they did. Very similar to my L88 clone project which would have been a ZL1 clone if Chevy hadn't discontinued production on the ZL1 block about 16 years ago. I had one on order for more than a year when they finally decided there weren't enough orders to make another production run.

The trans cooler was pretty standard for competition cars, and the Hooker side pipes are indistinguishable from the Kustom Headers supplied over the counter unless you are extremely knowledgeable on what to look for other than the Hooker badge or Kustom engraving mark. The curve of the 4 primary tubes at the collector is only very slightly different.

Their choice of gearing and the trans is the same as the one I spent many hours, weeks, months thinking about before I made a decision. I went with the stronger .82 od gear instead of the .62 they chose. They also chose to leave the cross member uncut as I first did. I'm sure someone will also regret this later!

I applaud them for leaving the compression high, to me this is the heart of the L88/ZL1 engine. I can't think of any other production engine that was so bold with this level of compression. Under the hood, it is about as stock looking as you will get. Very nice!

Like was said before, this is a custom car. I would also probably have chosen a different color without the stripes. The roll bar does seem to be a bit of a hassle, one of the reasons I like the coupe better. But a pure convertible is unquestionably gorgeous, the most sensuous of the Corvette profiles, IMHO.

I bet it is a real blast to drive! The 180 top end for the 90 mile road race sounds like the open road race in Nevada. They limit you in speed, just like NHRA tracks, based on equipment and ratings. Even though the car is more than capable of 200mph, they would have been busted if they did. This same race had a stock bodied 69 Camaro that ran over 220mph about 10 or 12 years ago.

There are PLENTY of Corvette forum members with cars for sale you could put a ZL-1 in and be in it waaaaay cheaper than $175K besides that spoiler looks horrible, it has the wrong headers and a "Donovan block" when did GM use a Donovan in anything??and it should have J-56 brakes NOT 'stock calipers"!! It`s a hot rod with a stripe. I think you could buy a "real" L-88 car for lots less. ...redvetracr

Not crazy about the front spoiler. 68-69's look perfect from the factory without a bunch of add-ons (factory flares look good tho)

IMO they should have left a rare tri-power car alone. A 327 base coupe would have been a better choice, considering the only 2 ZL-1's built were both coupes.

Well I do agree that cutting up a tri power was stupid, and $125 prolly means he paid someone to do it, too much $$

But I must be weird. I like the front spoiler and no flares look better than the converse.

If they had restored that car to original condition it would be worth something, where do they get ZL1 from anyway that car has 502 and 6 speed ? :confused:
