Default distributor, why a 3/8 and 1/4 hole?

Only reason I ask is someone had used a non-tach on my car and it doesnt have these holes in the housing. Im doing some tests with this dist and was wondering.

You might get more answers if you were a little more specific about what you are looking at.
Are you asking this question about a stock tach drive dist. or the non-tach drive that someone installed in your car?
Where are these holes located on it?

Im looking at my tach drive distributor that has two big holes through the housing assembly, one on upper portion of housing and other between two lower machined surface.

The holes are there to act as a vent to keep oil from pushing up the distributor housing. Some housings have them, so do not. If you are not getting oil in by the point/module, then you do not need the holes.
