How can I tell if my EGR is working?
Lately my car has been running hotter than normal when it is under load. Someone told me this could be because my EGR valve is not opening. How can I check this? My car is an 81.

if the egr valve is sticking, you will get an error code 32 and when the valve sticks, the motor quits running.
I'd check the thermostat...that might be sticking. Take it out and put it in a pot of boiling water and watch if it has trouble opening.

I don't have any error codes in my car, and the motor doesn't quit or run abormally. I have verified that the thermostat is opening when it's supposed to.
I pulled up on my EGR valve while it was idling and the engine started to stumble. That is an indicator that all my passages are clear, correct?

If there are no error codes, then the egr valve is fine. If the thermostat is opening, then I would look at the bottom of the radiator. Look for seperated cooling fins. Another area to look is the clutch fan....turn the fan...and there should be resistance, if no resistance than the cluthch mechanism is shot. Don't forget to take off the fan belts

 I gott’a ask what does your radiator look like inside – drain water and use a flashlight? Can you see things growing in there? Any crystals?
Not to be sarcastic but you didn’t say anything about flushing the system and how often. Maybe time for rodding the radiator?
Flush mine every two years (when its running) and new hoses & belts every five.
