Something's been bothering me since Monday...
when I was watching the muscle car show on speed channel. Did the narrator say the street hemi was the greatest prod. engine ever? Did he really say that....or were my ears malfunctioning? Surely that aint right. I think the LS7 was the greatest prod. engine.

Was the LS7 ever offered in a street car? I thought it was pulled by GM before any got into production cars.

Didnt the Chevelle have the LS6 engine?I think the LS7 was a "race engine only" and was only available over the counter?

Re: Something's been bothering me since Monday... (Brettmc)
LS6 was in the 1970 Chevelle SS. They also came with LS5, but the LS6 is the one with more hp-450hp if I'm not mistaken. I've never heard of the LS7 being in a production car. I'm an old Chevelle guy, so take it for what it's worth.

My bad then. It's the LS6 I'm thinking of...with the underrated 450 hp rating. Is this competition for the street hemi?

Not too sure, but from what I have been told that old hemi was indeed "badder" than even the LS6. Curious to see if anyone can come up with any real info on this though.(Superfast, do you know??)
There is a legend in my home town, a fellow that lives a block from my parents had one, he was well known for roasting the tires all over town, from stop sign to stop sign. The Chief of Police made a deal with him. He could avoid jail time and impounding if he parked the car in his shed and pulled the drive shaft off. It's still sittin there today. :)
Maybe thats why alot of these cars sit up forever. There owners know if they start them up, they won't be able to contain themselves. :D I know this guy wouldn't be able to....

No joke :yesnod: thats the story. Not sure how true the entire legend is, but one thing I am certain of for sure. He has this old classic hemi car and a 455 (forget the model but see it every time I pass) that have not moved in decades. Again, this guy is one of a kind.

Re: Something's been bothering me since Monday... (Brettmc)
The street hemi was indeed a benchmark engine, however I think greatest might be a stretch. My dad drag raced in the late 60's to mid 70's and he always said they were just that, a "street hemi." He was a Chevy guy but never disliked anything that was fast. How about the L-88 or ZL-1 aluminum 427? Not full production, but available.

Yeh, it might have been a 'street' hemi, but all it needed was cam and headers, and.....look out!!!
decent trannies backing it up too.....not that crap GM puts out that needs all sorts of mods to make them survive....thinking of automatics here now...

If your talking power output then yes, the BB's are the greatest production street engines but for just pure numbers, aftermarket parts, reliability the Chevy small block V8 is the greatest of all time IMO.

I'm not really sute what the hemi actually puts out, I've heard it was underated at 425, but I certainly think the L-88 had more power, being underated at 430 and actually having around 550

The early Street Hemi's developed a repution for broken piston rings, cracked intake manifolds, and being very difficult to keep in maximum tune. But when they were in-tune, virtually nothing on the road was more powerful."

The LS-7 was supposed to be an engine option in 1970 for the Corvette. The LS-6 was planned for the Chevelle. Since Chevy already had the vette set up with the LS-7 option & LS-5 option, they felt there was no need to add the LS-6 to the list.
The LS-7 specs made it onto all of the early maintenance manuals. At the last minute, they killed the LS-7 due to fed regulations. I bet quite a few higher ups weren't too happy to lose that motor (especialy since the Vette is supposed to have the most hp in the Chevy line up) Plus all of the manuals and brochers getting screwed up too.

I don't get it. So it has 425 hp. What makes the hemi better than the other 425 hp offerings?
