Default Oil Temperature Sensor

I have an 81 vet with an oil temp guage. The guage doesnot work. I did the test where I grounded the wire on the sensor and the guage in the car spiked out when I turned on the ignition. Hence the sensor is bad. Today I got the new sensor (from Zip for about $30 delivered). In looking at the new sensor the place where the wire attaches to the sensor is straight. On the old one the wire attachment point is bent. Is it the bent attachment which caused the old one to fail? Any speical thing I need to do to make sure I do not mess up the new sensor?

Thanks.

The sensor is on (screwed in) the engine block just above the oil filter.
