383 6 inch rod
I'm thinking about going thru my motor again. Is a 6 inch rod worth the extra money, what kind of power gains should I expect, would it rev higher being that the rod stroke ratio will be better? :skep:

Your question is perfect for or resident 383 stroker expert, gkull. I don't have an answer for you but I bet George(gkull) can give you all the information.
This is just my way of keeping it at the top for you! :D

A 6-inch rod in a 383 gives you better rod ratio and dwell at the top of the stroke. The down side is you need to run a very tight ring pack. The oil ring will actually be in the wrist pin cavity. Fine on a race motor but questionable in a street motor.

I have Eagle 4340 H Beam 6" rods in my 383,the pistons are high pin, short skirt SRP from JE......They weren't significantly more expensive than the top quality 5.7 rods and pistons as they are pretty much standard sizes....john :chevy :seeya

I am running 6 inch manley sportsmasters with KB Silvolite Hypereutectic pistons. I concur with the short slirt and crowded ring bunching. Also the short skirts means more rock in the piston so forged pistons would tend to be really noisy. Check out the manleys. They are very light and competitive price.

Re: 383 6 inch rod (71roadster)
I was under the impression that a longer rod was always a good thing. I think it was Smokey Yunick who said that longer rods let the piston hang at Top Dead Center for a longer period of time before the piston traveled down during the combustion stroke, allowing more compression ( I think?) and a better burn.

Re: 383 6 inch rod (74droptop)
If you do some research you'll find as far as stroker engines are concerned...there is much more piston/stroke selection with a 6" rod compared to a 5.7" rod. Leave yourself plenty of room for future upgrades, buy a 6" quality rod and be done with it.
