Carb rebuild - needle/seat issue
Hi all,
I'm in the process of rebuilding the stock carb on my '76 L-48 and I have a quick question w.r.t. the seat and needle. This is my first time so bear with me if this is stupid. :D
When the float bowl is empty and the float is sitting at the bottom of the bowl, the needle still doesn't rise out of the seat at all. Is this normal? It seems to me that it should be raised slightly out of the seat to allow fuel to get in, then when it gets to the appropriate level, the seat should lower and block the intake of fuel. Does the float level need to be adjusted or some such?
Thanks for your help, CF.

Re: Carb rebuild - needle/seat issue (VetticusSupersonicus)
BTW - I am rebuilding the carb due to an extreme rich condition at idle. A mechanic I talked to said that the float was too high.

V.S.
If your carburetor is a Rochester Quadrajet you may be missing the small clip that attaches to the needle and to the lever arm of the float. Not sure what carb you have but most q-jets have this clip which does raise/lower the needle as the float moves up and down. The clip is pretty small and it could easily get lost. You may want to check that. Good Luck!!

Vetti -
The needle clip will usually cause the needle to be pulled off the seat, but sometimes not: If the clip is a little sloppy, the needle will remain on the seat.
Whether it gets pulled off the seat or not is actually irrelevant: If the float level is down and the float is not pushing the needle into the seat, your fuel pressure will unseat the needle without assistance from the clip: The clip can be removed with no ill effect.
