Holley vrs. Edelbrock. How to choose?
Just got my engine back from the Dyno. The tested it with my Edelbrock 750 and with a Holley 750. The holley pulled much better through all RPM ranges.
Im not a carb expert on Holleys. I have heard stories that they are tough to setup and they need constant attention. The Edelbrock is pretty much bolt on and forget it. I would like to try a holley but not sure on models etc. I have a 454/470HP /490ft/lb of troque. It currently has a new Edelbrock 750 installed. What would be the best carb from Holley? Avenger or standard Holley etc... :seeya

Re: Holley vrs. Edelbrock. How to choose? (conway62)
I will talk from my experiences of just now really starting to understand carbs. I have experience with both edelbrocks and holley. I would first say that more then likely it was more the setup of the carb then the actual carb that gave those results. If one carb is a little to lean and the other just right, they could give very different readings. I have had edelbrock performer carbs and they were very nice. I had a holley (don't remember, but standard fair for a 350 small block) and could not get it right. Granted I really did not understand carbs that well and that was probably the issue. However, the edelbrock was definately closer to being correctly jetted from the get go. And, I did this with 2 different edelbrocks and had the same results. That said, I just put a street avenger on my 68 big block and have to say, out of the box, it was set up quite well. Others here have had quality control problems with theirs, but mine seems ok. However, I still can't get my big block to pass smog, but I believe that is do to the cam (no idea of what it is) becuase it only generates about 8-9 inchers of vacum at idle. So I am going to change my power valve to see if that is messing things up do to the low vacum.

:iagree:
Holley and Edelbrock are great carb and should deliver the same performance when tuned properlly. Since you already have an edelbrock, I would suggest getting it fine tune by someone who really know carburator. Then you'll get the full performance and grinding effect. :D
I like spreadbore carbs better since they are usually more fuel friendly.

I would find out the list # from the holley then set it up exactly like theirs if you're interested in switching. All the homework is already done!

I agree with those that said the difference is in the setup. My advise is to keep your Edel carb and learn how to tune it. Sure you could pay someone to set it up for you, but wheres the adventure in that?
Do you have the A/F ratio of your dyno pull? If so, that could be a starting point to determine which way you need to go with the metering rods. Also, Lars' paper on Q-Jets ( on http://www.corvettefaq.com ) would also be relavent. Basically, it forces you to tune each side, primary and secondary, one at a time.

Here's how to choose.....
#1- The Edelbrock is just ugly. Now just face it....unless you have two of them together sitting on a motor, you're going to have to keep the air filter on it so no one sees it!
#2 The Holley looks cool! No doubt about it, when you look at a hi-per motor..the Holley is the right look.
#3. Dominators look even cooler!
#4- The Edelbrocks out of the box are very reliable and dialed in very well overall as everyone mentioned. I have a buddy with two of them installed on a Mustang and they are fantastic. No bog, no hesitation and run like stink. Mid 12's on a VERY Mild 302 mustang with lo-rise intake and two 500's. Way too much carb, but they still run great. But did you notice the key words...he has TWO of them, so he is exempt from the ugly comments!
#5- The Holley is hands down about the most tuneable carb out there. Parts are easy to get and they are easy to mess with once you understand them. You can make them do anything you want, which is great if you put them on something pretty hairy..like a 470 hp 454....and still want to ride around smoothly. I run a 1050 Dominator on the street with no issues, but it took a little tweeking. Nothing huge, just a little work.
#6- 470 hp is a good motor. I would seriously look at a 950 HP Holley. Ask WA2FST about the one he just put on his 454. Trust me, you can use much more air than a 750 can provide. The formulas are WAY too conservative.
#7- Did I mention Edelbrocks are kind of homely looking???? I mean they are old Carter AFB's and AVS's basically and even in the 60's they looked sad unless you had two of them there!
Ok, everyone don't beat me up..just having a little fun! :D

I know..I know...I always have trouble expressing my true feelings!
Kind of like the Doublemint Twins....really pretty decent alone....but when you get the two of them together???????!!!!!!!!!
I guess that's a bad analogy..even with just one Doublemint Twin you'd be proud to show her off.....
UNLIKE HAVING AN EDELBROCK!!!
heheheheheheheh.......

PS- Don't even get me started on Demons!!

Just because you run a toilet for a carb, doesn't mean my Edelbrock is ugly!!

Re: Holley vrs. Edelbrock. How to choose? (MN 72 454)
The Dyno gave the a 25HP increase and 30 ft/lb increase over the edelbrock.
The Holley tested was a 750 Double Pumper. It was configured as follows:
Idle 1 1/2 turns out
Floats level at Idle
Idle set to 950 RPM
Main Jets 72
Power Valve 5.5
Edelbrock 750 performer 1411
Primary is set to stage one rich
Secondary is stock jetting
Idle is 1 1/2 turns out.
Is the basic holley 750 DP a reliable carb for the street? Where do you hook up pvc and dist vacumme?

It's still on there today working just great.
31 years and only a few gasket changes. No parts changed, just jets.
Setup
Floats level at Idle
Idle set to 750 RPM
Jets 73 Prim. 77 Sec.
Power Valve 5.5
