Will Chevy bring back the L88 name?
See if I got this right... starting in 1990, they began to "recycle" corvette names with the ZR1. This was a very rare high performance option available in 72? Shortly thereafter, in 92(?) they named the new standard equipment vette engine the LT1, borrowing the name from the high performance option available 70-72. They have since revived LS6 (engine name), ZO6, and most recently they used the ZL1 name on a crate engine. Do you thing they will use the L88 name, as a real vette engine, or maybe just a crate engine, or even a corvette model? Did I leave out any recycled nameplates? I wouldnt count GS. And I can never remember which version has the dash, ie, LT-1 vs LT1. :) MJ

I hope they do not bring it back. G.M. and their bean counter will not do the car justice. Even though they did a great job on the Z06, I feel they could have given the car more power, at least what a Viper has. Let's not us forget the Mote Carlo SS and the Impalla SS names that are now ruined. I rather G.M. refrain from using the L88 name than disgrace it w/ short comings.

Well, the new GTO doesn't do much for me, either. GM seems rather inept at producing exciting autos lately. I have high hopes that the C-6 debut will lead the wow factor return to the GM line-up.

If they do it will be a 427ci SB that makes 500+hp. This would not be THAT hard to do and pass emissions certification.
Will they do it? I don't know. GM doesn't seem to grasp the "limited production" concept at all anymore. While ANYTHING nowdays is not considered "limited production" compared to 30 years ago, things like the Dodge Viper (~5k units a year, I believe), soon-to-come Ford GT, and even some of the Ford SVT offerings are definitely limited production vehicles in today's market.
Z06 production makes up 20-25% of C5 Vettes, so it is certainly not a limited production vehicle.
That would be a shame if they bring it back as a mass-produced Vette...but it would still be really cool if done right.

I think they should bring it back, but only for a straight up race type engine that's track ready out of the box (just like the old one).

As an owner of an original 69 L88 Corvette, I personally would be excited if they brought back the option code L88 if the car was equipped with the C5R motor that the stage III 2002 ZL1s used and keep production limited like they did on the ZL1s. Can you say bye bye to Vipers and GT 40s :seeya

I would love to see an limited run of L-88's maybe only 100 or so to keep the cache and the race options as stated above. I may just be in the minority but it seems that the ZO6 is so common place that it doesn't really hold that cache marque name anymore - I am not saying that it isn't a great vette as it most definately is. I would just like to see some limited production runs like the L-88, ZR-1 (70 - 72) the accountants would have a field day with it and would likely price it in the mid 100's but nothing wrong with that either.

I think if they bring any of the old name plates back, it will be the Sting Ray.
That what they should have called the ZO6

I think it'd be a great idea, BUT only if it's in keeping with the original L-88....meaning it's gotta be a BB and fit in a C6! all aluminum wouldn't hurt either. I think the ZL-1 block they sell weighs in at 110lb.

it is GMs way of treading on the legends of the past to sell to the new generation of kids who probably have heard of the greats of yesteryear.....ZO6, LT-1, L-88, L-71/89, L-82 etc. GTO, 442 also were bastardized into modern go SLOW slugs in the 80s and now the 21st century, have they now shame...everything today is a copy it seems of things from the past, no new ideas just copies...oh well that is the NEW kids scene I guess.

yeah i love those new monte ss and impala ss. The people who own them are just out their damn minds.
They'll pull it into the shop i work at, all nicely waxed up with nascar stickers in the back window. Like yeah dude....your monte and the monte in nascar have anything in common.
Then they want to come talk to you about their car, beaming the whole time. Telling you to be careful with it seeing what a nice car it is. Dude....it's a v6 fwd daily driver....it has nothing "performance" oriented about it at all.
It's amazing, the car is only considered a performance car because chevy says it is.

I doubt you will see a big block coming out but then I never thought I would see the V8 come back like it has. With all the performace cars coming out lately it is a possibility.
I kind of like the look of the new impala and Monte Carlo. I can't speak to their perfomance. It is better than they have been doing. The new GTO is just sad. The whole Pontiac line looks like cheap economy cars. Bring back the menacing grill and chrome point to the front end. The old cars looked mean. GMs marketing has always been a little goofy and lame. The original sales flyer for my 79 in no way captures the excitement found in this car.

If Chevy was to bring back the L88, they'll probably do what Chrysler did when they brought back the Duster: Take a Plymouth Sundance, and put a "Duster" sticker on it. If they bring back the L88, I have a feeling that Chevy will do the same sort of thing. As for bringing back the Sting Ray, why? That was just a badge, much like the Duster sticker.

Re: Will Chevy bring back the L88 name? (MNJack)
I really hope they don't reuse the L88 name. I find it a bit of a pain when talking about LS6 motors to have to differentiate between the 454 version and the new one. The new LS6 is a very worthy engine that would generate its own mystique with whatever 3 character code may have been given to it. the whole point to having such codes is to make clear in an esoteric way what you are talking about.
L88: 427, 12:1 compression, 2.19/1.88 valves, .540/.560 lift solid cam, aluminum heads, single Holley 4 barrel of 850 cfm on aluminum dual plane hirise intake manifold.
LT1: 350, 11:1 compression, 2.02/1.64 valves, .459/.485 lift solid cam, iron heads, single Holley 4 barrel of 780 cfm on aluminum dual plane hirise intake manifold.
L46: ...
L82:...
ZL1: ...
etc.
Three characters described much. It took no time at all for each of the original codes to generate a strong following on their own merits. Why are they afraid that new engine combinations boasting excellent power again would be any different?
