painting center console plate; masking techniques?
I was about to remove the center console shift plate on the wifes 1973 to repaint the black areas; and as I looked it seemed almost impossible to mask off the areas not to be painted. Mainly... the raised ridge(s) that outline the various sections of the plate and are chrome.
Has anyone found an easy method to spray this plate, but keep the paint off the areas that aren't supposed to be black?
(BWT, I have purchased new slider plates for the shifter :) )

Paint the whole plate, let it set a couple hrs and scrape the trim off with a sharp Xacto knife. Then bake the part in an electric oven @ 225 for 20 minutes. I will get a pic up as soon as I find it ;)
To prep the plate I just rubbed it down real good w/ 0000 steel wool, wiped it down w/ Marine Clean twice & rinsed real good.

except that there are many other things that it can be wiped down with if you dont have any Marine Clean such as enamel reducer for one...or 3M adhisive & wax remover...

I just sprayed mine and then used a cloth with lacquer thinner to remove the paint off of the ridges.

You can go to any arts & crafts store, and get a silver leaf marker, I forget who makes them, but they work really great to renew the silver stripe around the trim.

Ed T: Great pics....you and Paul67 must hang out together.
Your great pics and detailed postings remind me of his. :yesnod:  Great pics and info. You gotta have about a 200 Gig HD to store all these pics.
A long time ago on the forum, someone said to paint the plate and remove any unwanted paint with an eraser??? Another idea was to cover the chrome areas with vaseline before painting and then wipe off before tossing in the oven. I haven't tried either method yet...that's waaay down on the "to-do" list.
