AM/FM Radio Restoration
Okay, what do you folks think? I've got 2 radios that are correct for my 75, neither one works. One is mono, the other stereo. I have been quoted a flat rate price of $350.00 to rebuild and repair the stereo unit, and $300.00 for the mono unit. I know I can get a Kenwood AM/FM Casette for around 200, and a Custom Autosound unit for about 175, but it just doesn't seem the same as the original radio the way the General intended. I am leaning towards having the stereo radio rebuilt and temporarily installing the mono unit just to cover the hole in the dash. Is this quote of $350.00 about the going rate for this type of work?

I just went through this except I took out a Kenwood (custom auto sound) as I wasn't happy at all with the sound. These are $89 radios modified to fit the early dash. I put the original radio that the old owner gave me in a bag. It is much better tha the Kenwood. It just needs to have 8 ohm speakers. I wired two 4 ohm speakers in series per side. It will not be quite as loud as the aftermarket units but the sound is better. Check out.. http://www.wonderbarman.com

Wonderbarman (Tony) is the same guy who quoted me the $350.00 flat rate repair price. He certainly does seem to know his stuff. Have you had yours done by him? This is good info on that Custom Auto Sounds unit.
EDIT: I just checked my new speakers and they do ohm out at 4 ohms. Instead of wiring extra speakers couldn't I wire a 4 ohm resistor in series? Do you have any idea how many watts the resistor would need to be rated at?

Guys, $350.00 is way too much. My service is $100.00 plus parts, plus shipping(both ways). Usually for a radio like you mentioned, it would be about $175.00. Check my feedback on ebay(72vetteman). Email me if interested. Scott

Or, better yet, I will buy your nonworking radios and let you install whatever you wish. Either way, let me know. Scott

I n 76 0r 77 the Radios changed and are not interchangable with early ones.
I have a pair of speakers that are in a tear drop shaped enclosuer that fit in the back corners above the wheel well and can hardly be seen and take up none of the cargo space. They are a ported enclosure so they were a little too bassy with the delco. I took them apart andline the inside wity some faom. It helped alot.

Did they give any kind of a guarantee with the repair? That sounds like a really good deal. Was this a pre-76 radio or newer? Apparently the older ones had a lot of problems with cold solder joints, repairs might be more costly because of this. Thanks for posting!

This looks nice, but wow, that is kinda pricey. I thought 350 to restore mine was a little high. Thanks for posting!

$595.00 for a original Corvette radio!!!! Wait, let me get up off the floor....... You would have to have your head examined to pay that much. Granted it does have a CD connection but man o' man!! I sell 68-76 mono radios for a flat $199.00 plus shipping. Stereos are $50.00 more for 73-76 units. As you can see, I'm not trying to get rich off this stuff, just trying to price mine reasonably and to make a few(<--key word here) bucks. Scott
