What is the best octane boost to use?
Hello,
I'm almost ready to put my rebuilt motor back in my car and might use 93 octane plus octance boost. I went to a couple of auto part stores and saw a lot of different kinds of octane boost. I want to know what the best brand to use is. I have just over 10:1 compression so I don't really need the boost but I though it might be cool to use.
Thanks,
Kevin

use race gas to boost the octane as all those "octane" boosters will cause fuel system problems. i have seen this in the carbs i have rebuild that have had "octane" booster.

Do you mean "Cam 2" or something like 110 octane fuel that you have to get at the airport or race track?

What Clem said. Also, octane boosters do very little for your octane. They say things on the label like "boosts octane three points," but those three points are AFTER the decimal, as in from 93 to 93.3.

There is a chemical company in Utah that sells Supreme 130. It is REAL TEL aditive.
Mix 1oz to a galon of 93 unleased and you will blend 96.0 real 70's vintage leaded gas.
Here is a link to the website so you can read the data/info for yourseld. I bought a case 12 / 32oz containers and after I blend it durringthe fillup my car runs like it has a tank of 100 LL AV-Gas.
http://www.kemcooil.com/product_info.php?pId=61
The stuff is great - just be sure you DO NOT use it with catalytic converters - it will destroy them.
If you have any questions , please call. 850-567-2994.

JB ...
It avgs .32 per gallon (blending to et 96.5). So if you are paying 175.00 for 93 , your cost is just over 2.00.
Last time I bought AV-GAS, it cost around 2.50 - 3.00 per gallon.
Beside, you do not get the same lead content consistancy as with LS-130.
Unless you are running 11.5:1 compression or greater, 100LL does you absolutely no good.

Re: What is the best octane boost to use? (L-82kid)
The Lead Supreme 130 is very good and at $10 per quart is much cheaper than adding either race gas or Av gas. One quart raises my octane a full 4 points, 91 to 95 (r+m)/2. Not point 4 like the typical auto store stuff.
I have no detonation or pre-ignition with my 12:1 compression motor driving on the street. For the track, I use race gas.

Chuck,
I spoke with the owner of the company who produces the LS-130.
He said that 1-2 oz per gallon, added to 93 (altitude, base gasoiline used factor into this) will yeild 96-98 octane leaded fuel.
I have a buddy who is a chemist and works at a refinery in New Jersey.
He did the additive as I mix it ( 93 Amaco , 1.0oz TEL), tested the fuel and figured the octane to be 96. This guyI trust, he has been blending and creating fuel additive for nearly 25 years.
The ratings they put in their liturature (LS-130), mix ratios are correct. For some un-godly reason LS-130 seems to derrive greater octane numbers with a non-linear add ratio. Seems it takes less at quantity to get higher number then at lower mix ratio.
Call the guy at Kemco. He is really nice to talk to and knows his stuf too.
