Default 82 CE speeds up on own initiative

I had previously reported this problem area and don't remember if anyone ever responded,so I'm seeking help again. Thanks in advance to all who may respond.Today while driving on a major freeway, the 'vette sped up as if I had depressed the pedal to a greater degree. The problem is that I did not depress the pedal to a greater degree. This is getting very scary, particularly when I almost rear end someone.I will not be driving the 'vette again until I learn about the cause.I am wondering if my cruise control is kicking in without me setting it?I'm driving along and suddenly the 'vette surges. Please give me your thoughts when you find some time. tankman

It sounds like the have the problem narrowed down-the cruise control. I'm not exactly sure how the cruise works, but I'd say that it is getting a bad reading, because you have a faulty switch or vacuum issues.

The throttle position sensor can cause this. It will also surge at idle. Did the service engine light come on?

Hello 79 Vette Mike and bluevetteman,
Thanks for the quick responses. The engine light does not come on,and I don't have the slightest idea of where the sensors are.I do have several manuals and will look tomorrow. Is there an easy way to disable the cruise control? I never use it.Is there a down side to disabling it ?

If you don't use the cruise I would try disconnecting the cruise cable from the throttle. That would eliminate your cruise, and give you some safety. Old cruises have been known to stick, not a good thing.

I am thinking it is the throttle position sensor though.

Hello LAvetteman,
Thanks for the response.I'll definitely be into my books tomorrow trying to locate the sensor and cable.

Your throttle position sensor is on the left (driver) side of left throttle body. Pull the air cleaner and you'll find a black thing with a two pole (??) weather pack connector hanging on the lower part of the throttle body.

Your cruise control transducer is mounted on the left rear of the engine compartment cleverly hidden under the brake booster. A nearby vacuum chamber controls the throttle via cable that is at one point is attached to the alternator bracket.

That all said my question is what stops this acceleration? A touch of the brake pedal, let off gas, turn ignition off, parachute :D ?

Also does it surge with the AC on only?
I was thinking it could be the fuel puddling in the manfold.

Good call- I didn't realize he has fuel injection.

Hello Enad and Desertdawg,
Thank you for the "roadmap" to the thingys to be checked.A rapid and panicked stomping of the brake pedal stops the accelleration.sometimes when I release the brake pedal the 'vette will accellerate a second time, and I am close to leaving some "poopie" on my beautiful seats.I rarely use the a/c.thank you very much for taking the time to help me.

Maybe that parachute would come in handy :jester

I'm not an expert by any means but since it is a sustained acceleration I would certainly check the function of the cruise control and make sure the throttle linkage is free.

Hey Enad,
Thanks again.I'll check it,but am leaning towards disconnecting cruise control.I haven't been able to stay focused because the Kids came over with their kids.
