Aluminum or "Dead soft" Copper header gaskets
Any reccomendations over conventional gasketing materials? Reinstalling 427 in a '69 in two weeks and obviously don't ever want to replace gaskets if I can avoid it.

Corey: Have you actually used these gaskets?

I use .040 copper gaskets and I had to O ring the block for the 12 pounds of blower pressure. I do not recommend copper or aluminum gaskets because they tend to seep. There are really good composite gaskets on the market and if I didn't have to o ring the block that is what I would have used.
I ran 150 horse nitrous motor for years without a problem with a composite gasket.

I hope everything the head and block surfaces were trued (level). Run the GM Composition Gaskets which are good to will handle just about everything you build into the engine. O-ringing the block and or the cylinder heads is a pain in the rear.

To run copper head gaskets you MUST have an o-ringed block or heads. I am running the new Titan S.C.E. copper head gaskets with an o-ringed block, on the street no problems.

I'm going to use Earl's pressure seals & Stage 8 locking bolts at the recomendation of guys here on the forum. They look hefty.
Here's the description:
High performance engine sealing from Earls.
Big Chevy: header seals, 396, 402, 427, 454, 502
These Earl's Pressure Masters long term seals combine graphite foil sealing inserts, aluminum retainers, and a temperature resistant silicone elastomer to make ordinary gaskets, seals, and adhesives obsolete. Each seal is framed by the aluminum retainer and can be preloaded for guaranteed positive closure and optimum bolt preload. There is no need for adhesive during installation or reassembly and no need to retorque after assembly. The aluminum retainer gives a metal to metal seal on headers, collectors, or valve covers, and allows the seal inserts to be easily replaced if needed.

some people here are talking about HEAD gasket whereas the topic is about HEADER gaskets.. I run Percy aluminium. Oh yea and when you get them, don't think you got lucky and the's more than 2 in the package, you DO NOT peal the alu layers apart and end up with 8 gaskets, some poor dumb hiney I know did the exact thing and rendered the gaskets useless

I have the copper ones in the vette and the aluminum ones in my Blazer. I think either one is as good as the other, of course anything is better than using paper to seal up hot exhaust gases!

Re: Aluminum or "Dead soft" Copper header gaskets (nitrocharger)
I've been putting off getting headers for the 72 because I was waiting to find out if they really work. Does anyone use the copper or aluminum collector gaskets. Do they work?

Re: Aluminum or "Dead soft" Copper header gaskets (MN 72 454)
percy's aluminum header gaskets and stage 8 bolts are the best way to go
i have used many sets of the copper and they did ok the first use but as far as being reusable they are not a perfect seal. i have not tried to reuse the aluminum ones yet but as far as the first use they are the best i have had
also i have tried the copper collecter gaskets and they do not blow out like paper but they also do not conform very well so they do not wrk well for surfaces that are not perfect the aluminum ones conform very well but are thick and i had a hard time getting them in position but it was worth it :yesnod:

Re: Aluminum or "Dead soft" Copper header gaskets (dewcustom)
Thanks to all for the comments !
I'm going with the Percy's. My engine bulider confirms copper is non conforming for street. Also I work with polymer technology and Silicone rubber compounds won't hold up long term at exhaust temps as in the Earl's product.
This wouldn't be such a big deal except Hooker sidemounts in an already tight engine compartment are a real PIA to change gaskets on.

Ive been using the same set of Percys dead soft collector gaskets over and over again with no leaks. I highly recomend them.
