I bought the 282S cam, a straight up cam and I love it however I didn't know at the time about the XE series or I would have gone with it, let us know how it turns out :D

Norris - I used the Crane power max 278 solid years ago and liked it so much that i talked a fellow Vette owner into installing it. If you go to the Crane web sight it looks pretty big because of the duration specs @.050 but because of how it's ground and it's wide lobe center (114) it's got a really wide power band.
It's makes those nice crackling sounds at idle with uncapped headers!:)

There is so little information out there about this cam. I figured that since the hydraulic XE line was so popular with this C3 bunch, that somebody here would have tried it already. If it as good as people attest the hydraulic version is, then it should be worth the try.
Those Crane solids have MONSTEROUS numbers. Scary....even with the wide LSA.

nunus- that Crane powermax 278 that gkull recomends might work. It has 238 deg at .050, which would be a lot for a hyd - but not too bad for a solid.
My old Clay Smith cam had 234 @ .050" with a 108 l/c and it idled better than my current XE268H (when I set the clearance at .022").
What ever solid you get make sure the lifters that come with the kit don't restrict the oil flow to the top end. I had trouble with the regular Clay smith mech lifters as they cut down the oil to the valve train. That's ok if you are using roller rockers, but my stamped rockers turned blue and cracked.
If you are looking for something different, you should check out the Crower Cool -Face solid lifters. They have a small hole that feeds oil directly onto the cam - great idea I think, especially if the ramps are steep.

Been concidering a solid cam lately myself, but am not sure I'm willing to tweak the valve lash to keep it running over the long haul. How often do you need to lash a solid. I run 400 miles a week, and even Comp Cams advised me to stay with a hydraulic grind.
