Floored by Luxucruisers 1/4 Mile Times
The last two months of Car and Driver featured road tests of Mercedes Benz's two new luxucruisers, the S600 and the all new Maybach 57.
Both cars have dual turbocharged V12 engines. The Maybach was 5.5L and the S600 was 5.3L. The Maybach weighed 6200 lbs and the S600 about 5200 lbs.
The Maybach did the quarter in 13.2 sec at 109mph and 0-60 in 4.9 secs.
The S600 ran 12.5 sec in the quarter at 115 mph and 0-60 in 4.3 seconds!!!!
All the times were just stab and go. There was no brake torque against the converter or other tricks.
I know that price is no object with these two cars but to haul over 2 1/2 and 3 tons down the quarter in those times is outstanding.

For half the price you could drop a 502 with a 8-71 in and run easy 10's!

Ah, but could you do it with a pair of rear seat pasengers listen to the best multimedia system money can buy?
Personally I would never buy this car, but it is sweet. Now where's my chauffeur?

Jim, in the mid/late 60's there was a guy with a '60 Bonneville stationwagon running those kind of times high 12-lo-13s......wonder what that dragon wagon weighed....My recollection was 5500 lbs or so....and a supposed 389, now I KNOW that engine was NO 389 anymore...could not have been, BUT it was a Pontiac block and tranny all the way...carb'd too....at that time the 428 wasn't out all that long, so we assumed the engine was a 421, ok, fine...
so for turbo charging in a similar weight car, and all these decades, later in a 5.7 liter engine....that's all they can do????
pardon ME, but that wagon had just 7" slicks on it....

Re: Floored by Luxucruisers 1/4 Mile Times (mrvette)
mrvette, a buddy of mine had a 'poked-n-stroked' 455" Buick in a 4700+ lb '67 Wildcat that went 12-flat @ 118+, spinning the 8" Eagles all thru first gear. It didn't idle like a bus, or cost what a poor-hitting short-stop makes, either.....

Yeh, I know, but this engine was allmost 'stock' in that it wasn't all that wild in the CI department....sure the cam idled like something, but he raced in the old stock classes...I forget just what class though...I want to say C-D stock automatic....

As others have said, anyone with some cash can build a fast car, but that's not the point of these things. Dragsters do not have 2.65 diffs, or clean, silent engines making ~600 ft-lb around 1800 rpm, yet with a curve so flat that power peaks all the way up at 5000 rpm (~500 hp). The engine, transmission, and suspension are designed for effortless high speed driving, not 1/4 mile times. I heard of an S600 with I think just a mild rechipping trap 11.7 seconds. There's a lot of potential there if someone DOES want to race those cars.
The 700+ ft-lb Mercedes sedans are coming out in a year or two as well. That's already beyond crazy in a non-AWD street car, let alone a luxury sedan.

The point of my reply was what do these cars cost? Is it that amazing that they get that kind of performance? Granted, we won't have DVD players in them for the backseat passengers (backseat? Corvettes don't even HAVE backseats!). All of that extra crap I can do without. Gimme a good stereo, and a kickass, good handling car with a brutal motor. That's all I want. :smash:

Hell, I don't even need the stereo, and I'm a lot more interested in handling than quarter-mile times.
