Re: porting the vortec heads and installing larger valves (79corvetteTPI)
I would think the cost of those mods would be almost as much as better new heads less what ever you can get for them. Porting ain't cheap when farmed out.

Re: porting the vortec heads and installing larger valves (Fevre)
:withstupid: Porting the Vortecs is not a cost effective option in the long run. The Vortecs are a great deal because they're iron, they're damn cheap, and they flow like gangbusters. The hinderance is in the valve lift-anything greater than .450" lift causes spring binding. The option is to cut into the valve seat with a valve seat cutter (which is fairly cheap to buy-or to have a head shop do it for you) and intsall bigger springs which won't bind (after the mod, I think it'll take up to .525" lift). If I was you, and on a budget, I would buy the Vortecs-either with the increased lift capability already (Scoggin Dickey Sells them like that already for dirt cheap), or have a machine shop cut the heads. I would not port them. Porting them (although they have a weaker Exhaust Flow, and porting can increase .400" lift flow by c. 40 cfm) will raise the cost to the point where you could have bought a good set of aluminum (therefore lighter and better heat dissapating characteristics, close to same flow) heads instead. Hope that helps

i run a 355 sbc in a 96 subaru legacy
yes i am 100% on putting 2.02 1.64 valves on the vortec heads, machine .020" off the heads 0 deck the block and just knock off the pointed edges in the ports and polish all the way through my legacy weighs just over 2700 lbs and runs 6.2's in in the 1/8th 373 gears turbo 400 trans. there is good comp. by having flat top pistons and $500 into a complete set of vortec heads. you can run a guy with high $ AL heads and put him to shame esp. for a low budget buildup and you'll be the only one running cast iron heads laddarbar setup and you'll have a low maint. hyd roller cam with thread in studs and 1.6 factory chromoly style rockers. i have a .540 .540 lift and a 243 @ 50 cam running a ken jones 750 holly double pumper on alky. hopefully this gives you some food for thought low budget engine running with the top dogs, just be sure to use all arp bolts!!! or you will be sorry best of luck after 2 seasons small car tunes and plugs along w oil changes are your biggest maint. ltems if you get set up post back ild like to hear your feed back and dont use a stroker you will loose around .7 sec. the heads dont flow enough for anything bigger than a 355 sbc

Those dont flow enough to take advantage of your 350 with that cam.
sbcsubaru guessing youre new mods dont like threads older than 45 days bumped up

no matter what you do, whenever you put 2.02 valves in a small block chevy it is important to unshroud the valves. otherwise you will cut flow. it is a real power killer.

Melting Slicks
A really good friend of mine talked me in to doing two sets of Vortecs for his twin engine Donzi (boat). Half way though, I was ready to blow my head off. It was major, major work, not worth doing for the cost of what you can buy ready to run heads these days. As I said though, he was a really good friend. I installed custom made 2.02 and 1.58 valves with head shapes that compliment my radius seats. I matched the chambers to the bore, unshrouded the valves, cut them for push on seals and 1.550" springs and capable of taking 650 lift. The heads came out really good, but I would not do it again with a gun at my head. The new engines were 383's. I also had a custom hydraulic roller cam ground with high lift and moderate duration. You have to really be careful with cams in a boat.
Long story short, they made 500/495, so it worked out well, but I think they took a few years off my life.
