Fiber Optics repair info.
Are their any sites that cover or have info. on the fiber optic system for a 71. I want to see what is involved in the repair and how the optic strands are ran and where they go. I've looked around on the web, but could not find anything on them. Thanks

The only place I have seen touch on this subject is a book I have "corvette restoration guide" I think is the name.
I can tell you what I know:
Very simple system, light shines in on one end out the other.
If you have a cut line, splicing will give poor results, non interuption is best.
The fiberoptic lines run from headlights, turn signals, and liscense plate light housings to lenses on console. These lines are wound into the rest of the wiring harness.

I've just about finished mine , what do you need some pics of the interior or exterior. Actually if you have an assembly manual it does show the routing of all cables.

Splicing works you just need the right machine. I know enough people at LSU, and since I work with fiber I could managed to get anything I needed test and repaired cheap if not free. Fiber is a very delicate thing, and since glass is a fluid it is always moving. This presents most of the problems with 30+ year old glass.

Lectric Limited sells the fiber optic harnesses by themselves. They are expensive, though. I read that a splice can be made if both ends are cut perpendicular to the length of the strand and butted together end to end without overlapping any strands. Use heat shrink tubing to hold the ends together-- preferably the kind with heat activated adhesive (available at an electrical supply house or Eastwood sells it).

I was just wanting to get info to see what was involved in the repair. The 71 that I'm looking at needs the front fiber optic repaired, but I will not know exactly where the problem is until I get it, if I decide to buy it.

It would be pretty hard to tell where the fiber is broke unless there is an obvious cut/break in the harness. In order to determine where the break is you would need a fiber continuity tester, which is nothing more than around a 850nm red laser that glows through fiber insulation at break points.
