When driving to Carlisle I was fumbling in the dark at my center vent switch and accidently turned on my wipers. When I turned them off, the door shut before the wipers fully went down and wedged in the wipers. I have not used the wipers in years and found this problem by mistake.
Any suggestions on what this might be?

There is a little vacuum valve located on the passenger side wiper well on the arm shaft mount. This valve has a spring-loaded plunger on it. When the wiper arm contacts the plunger and pushes the vacuum valve assembly down it activates the control system, it signals that the wiper arms are in the parked position and for the operating system to close the door. A new vacuum switch is about 40 bucks and takes about 20 minutes to replace. Yours could also be loose or out of adjustment so before throwing money at it, I'd check that first.

There is also an electrical switch that signals the wipers when they can start but this wouldn't be your problem. It only completes the electrical circuit once the door is fully open and starts the wipers. This switch mechanism is adjustable if your wipers are starting while the door is not fully open.

You can get to the vacuum switch by taking off the grille, you don't have to take the whole door assy out. I had the same problem with mine and it turned out to just be an adjustment on that vacuum switch.

The adjustment is a screw with a locking nut on it.
