Almost nothing... This has been dicussed before. .5mm would be acceptable, but not more.

The soultion is to replace the driveyokes with ones which have hardened tips.

2-3mm doesn't sound excessive to me. I had about 10mm missing from one side yoke when I replaced it. Only fix is to replace the side yoke. I went with the standard grade but for around $200 apeice you can get custom hardened yoke that should never wear out in the life of the car.

This is not true. Side yokes can be the problem, but also a worn clutch pack. The center pin keeps the yoke from sliding in too far, if the tip of the yoke is worn this will allow too much movement toward the pin too.

BUT it is the clutch pack that stacks behind the side gears that the C clip rest against that keep the yoke from sliding OUT.

The side yokes on my 69 had very little wear after about 120,000 miles. I went with new HD yokes anyway because I wanted the stronger bolt caps. I set up the differential tight, .001" side yoke movement while on the bench. But on the car, shaking the wheel, you will get more due to the extra leverage the wheel gives you to compress the clutch pack. In my case, about .012-.015" at the yoke, .125"-.200" at the tread with the car jacked up and the wheel hanging down. Guldstrand said this was fine.

I agree the tighter the better, but in reality, anything over an 1/8 inch is unsafe, and in fact, the wear on the spyder gear cross shaft is/can be allmost as bad as the side yokes, and therefore some of the slop is nearly impossible to remove...unless they are making that cross shaft now...they didn't used to...it WAS NLA......

GM allows up to .080 (!) per side, which is a bunch. However, with that much on one or both sides, handling will be less than desireable :D .

I have .015 on the LH driver's side and about .040 on the RH passenger side, so I can put it off a bit, but it's on my list of things to tighten up.
