set it where you want and put a drop of crazy glue on it, other than that you are looking at buying a new one.

Take the mirror off the car, lay it face down in a plastic pan and cover the head and glass portion with gasoline, lacquer thinner or acetone. Let it set over-night. In the morning the pick up the mirror by the base and shake the mirror. The glass should drop out, if it doesn't then soak it some more and try again. If it is still stuck in the head, take a paper clip and make a small "L" shaped hook on one end of it, slip the hook part under the glass and gently lift on the glass. It should come out with just a little lifting.
Lay the mirror aside for later cleaning.
Then look at the head portion, there is a metal piece that fits over the ball, it is held down with rivets, to tighten up the metal carrier to the ball fit, peen the rivets with a punch or chisle. It will tighten it up.
Clean the old RTV like adhesive off the inside of the head and the back of the mirror. Wipe the mirror glass and head clean with alcohol or lacquer thinner to get any oil off of it. Then use RTV adhesive to glue the glass back in place.
I did this to both of my mirrors 3 years ago and they are still good and tight!
It really isn't much trouble.
I tried the super-glue and clear RTV, neither one worked very well and the mirrors were flapping in the breeze in a couple of days.

Cool trick. Do you have a similar one for the sport mirrors? The mirrors on my '80 drive me crazy. The support is firm against the door but the bucket around the mirror rattles (for lack of a better description). They don't appear to come apart and I've never seen a method for taking them apart. Am I stuck buying new ones?

great tip, I have only tried the superglue, held for 1 season and JB Weld sold the car before it let go. I have the same problem on my 72 but just haven't done anything about it yet, continually adjusting it as well.
