Do your trim rings squeek?
I was cruising next to a concrete barrier and could hear a methodical squeek/creaking noise coming from the passenger side. The noise would speed-up/slow down in conjunction with the speed of the car.
I immediately thought the bearings were failing. Bairs just rebuilt my rear ones some 200 miles ago, so I figured it was the Passenger front. Pulled everything apart and inspected the bearings. They looked new. Re-packed them and put everything back together (left the trim ring off). Drove around the same route and the noise was gone. Came back inspected the trim ring. I tightened up the clips and pounded the thing back on with a rubber mallet. Drove around again, still no noise.
My guess is that the trim ring was loose causing the noise.
Ever happened to you?

Re: Do your trim rings squeek? (Stewart's74)
When I had the first set of tires put on my car, they mounted the wheel weights on the inside and outside of my wheels. Well, the ones on the outside of the wheel squeaked like mad against the trim rings. I went back and had them balance the tires with weights on the inside only; no more squeak :D
But no, mine have never squeaked by themselves.

Yup, before I switched rims.
My fix was a little more Bubba-ish. I just popped the rings off and put a long strip of duct tape around the tabs on the inside to eliminate the metal-to-metal contact. all you want, but it made the squeak go away.

Yep, I've got aftermarket rings and they squeak/creak. Thet will also "walk" around the rim until they cut into the valve stem :mad

What a great thread! I've been cruising next to concrete barrier and heard same thing and couldnt figure out what the heck it was. Thought it was brakes or lock wire to center hub. Now I know it must be the rings. :yesnod: THX

Same thing here. I just replaced my tires and the shop put all the balancing on the inside and properly installed the trim rings. My prior tires were balanced both inside/outside edge of the rim. I knew what the noise was so it didn't bother me, but I do notice that there is no noise now! :hurray:
