Roller Rockers: Where and which one to buy?
Hi over there,
this is Gerrit from Germany again!
I'm thinking about replacing the stock rockers in my totally original '69 427/400 (L68) with roller rockers in really good quality. More modifications I definitively don't want to do on that engine.
So can you give my a vendor's adress, where I can order those items? And can you give me the right specification too?

I used Crane Roller Rockers in my 69 BB. Bought them from Summit Racing years ago. They have held up really well. You will not be able to use your stock valve covers. You will have to go with an aftermarket type with no drippers. I used aftermarket valve covers which were stock height and two valve cover gaskets.

If so, I must give up my plan with those roller rockers because I don't want to replace the original covers. The stock look shouldn't be affected and it would happen by using aftermarket covers (no dings from the drippers on the surface).
My plan is, just to replace the rockers - and nothing else!
The look must be 100% NCRS-proof!

I have not looked at a summit catalog in quite a while but, assuming no one has invented any new ones, if you want to go with a full roller rocker, they won't fit under the stock valve covers.
Competition Cams makes a roller tip rocker which is stronger than you stock rockers and may fit under stock valve covers, but it is not a full roller rocker. I bought a pair of aftermarket valve covers at a swap-meet without the drippers and I think they were the stock height but I still had to use two gaskets to clear the rockers. I to wanted to keep a stock look for my NCRS buddy's but valve covers without the drippers welds are very noticeable. :sad:

Hi Ganey,
the "roller-tip" rockers seem to be only a "half the way" solution.
Aren't there really no roller rockers that fit under the stock covers ?????

Any power increase is from the increase in ratio. Stock measure less than spec. Full rollers are need to prevent galling of the ball pivot over about 6500 rpm or when valve spring pressures exceed 350 lbs.

How come everybody says that roller rockers "won't fit" under stock or stock-type valve covers? I'm sure glad nobody told me this before I installed rollers under my "stock" finned aluminum valve covers with baffles and drippers, etc.

Yea, I wanna know as well, why stock covers won't fit over roller rockers...since I'm running a BB, Harlan Sharp roller rockers, Polylocks, and long rocker studs, all under stock valve covers.
As the saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way.....and boys and girls, this is what you have to do to make this combination work:
1. Double valve cover gaskets
2. Trim drippers so they clear the Polylocks...not much, maybe 1/8-3/16"
3. Two Rocker edges have to be cut in a 45 degree angle to clear the bolt relief in the valve covers (2 per side)....trust me, there is enough meat on the rockers that removing a small corner will not fatigue the rockers...been buzzing the 533 cube past 7k and still ticking.
The Rockers that have to be ground are: corresponding to the valve cover reliefs for the bolts...upper left and lower right reliefs. I will pull the covers later and tell you what valves they belong to.

Full rollers do increase hp a little over roller tip but also decrease oil temp do to less friction. Thicker gaskets might eliminate the need for trimming the drippers, doubling them up (had 2 sets laying around) allowed me to run full roller 1.6's on my sb with no problems.

You might check out the shaft style rockers from Jesel or even Crane markets a new style now without needles. Not sure, but they are pretty short and might fit?
But I guess the real question is why? That engine doesn't need them if it's pure stock. No real gain to be realized.

The reason why is the fear about broken (stock) rockers. I've had that once and when I look at those stock rockers, made of simply pressed metal, I don't wonder why they break.
The roller rockes are much more stable and bring some more advantages to the valve-train. The increase in power is only a (welcome) bonus.

It really depends on how much you want to spend. Personally I would not buy aluminum rockers.
4340 Chromoly steel or even better stainless steel. When ordering one of things you need to know is the rocker stud diameter. The smaller 3/8th inch or the larger 7/16th's studs

Comp cams 4340 for 1.7's are $281.95 usd Crower makes the best. I only have a small block ,but it seems to me that the Crower 1.65's SS I use were more like $440 per set

so just buy some spare rockers in case yours explode!
Rollers are often less reliable, and when they break you get roller bearings into the oil pump and the motor is toast.

Crower SS rockers will fit under the stock covers, no grinding involved, just a double gasket and little trimming of the drippers....I ran the Crower SS.....talk about a heavy heavy rocker.....one think, they are bulletproof, but way way to heavy. They weigh almost twice as much as the aluminum.

I am running Harland Sharp "Diamond Series" full roller rockers under my STOCK '74 valve covers. They set me back $350.00 US or so......
