Default Holley 4150 carb question

I was wondering if there are any air cleaner base interference issues with any of the 4150 Holley carbs. I was looking specifically at the double pumper / mechanical secondary models in the 750 - 830 cfm range.

Some of the higher end units appear similar except the fuel bowls seem larger.

This concern would be for hood clearance issues on a big block using an LS-6 low-rise intake. I'm wanting to use the standard 3" drop base air cleaner that fits on my quadrajet (the heads & intake will have to change , I know).

Any experience with these carbs? I'm new to the Holley's and there seem to be a large selection, which is nice.

Sometimes the hose fitting to the valve cover hits the float bowl.

Depending on what diameter the base is, its possible that the throttle linkage could bind on the air cleaner base.

I guess the only way to find out is to try out the base on the carb before I buy it.

Thanks, Mark

For what it's worth I am running a drop base cleaner with a 750 dp and have run it with a 650 4150 dual feed with no problems.

Fevre, thanks for the reply.

That's encouraging to be sure. It's just that it's hard to tell from looking at a picture in a catalog. Also, some of the "HP" models look much bigger than the more traditional Holley's.

Thanks again, Mark

Here's the air cleaner base I'm using(pic courtesy Clink69).

It the base used on L-88's, LT-1's, L-46's amoung other Chevy models. It fits fine with a Holley 3310 and I don't expect any problems running a 4150 with my BB. The base has reliefs to accomidate the dual fuel bowls since Holley carbs were used on early C3's.

Thanks Money,

That looks like the one I have now on the L-36 or pretty close to it. Maybe I don't need to worry about it afterall.

Ok, the suspense was killing me. :D I went and sized up my 4150 HP Pro-Series 1000cfm Holley to the GM drop base unit. And guess what? Everything clears. BUT---I have mechanical secondaries and no choke.

You should be fine.

Thank you again!! That's great.

I was looking at that style although maybe not that large a cfm. I like the idea of going the route you are with the mech secondaries and no choke.

Some say that a vacuum secondary is the way to go on the street though. Then I hear others say that for the ultimate in performance potential you should use the double pumpers (mech. sec.).

After you get it installed and set-up please let us know how it works on your car.
