Which application is best for a TH700R4??
I am about to hit the boneyard to obtain a 700r4 to put into my 80. I am going to roll the dice and put a bone stock one in and get the juice out of it until I have to rebuild it. My question is.. is there a certain vehicle or year that is preferable for one or are they pretty much the same??
Thanks in advance...

yes, 87+ corvette trans. You will need a normal tailshaft (preferrably 82 corvette) because of the C-beam used in the C4. Also you'll need the mech. speedo adapter of an 82 corvette or another car that used a mech. speedo adapter. (C4 has electronic VSS) The vette trans is desireable because it allows WOT in 4th, non vette trannies don't. The 87+ is the year for the stronger version (more clutches in 2-3 pack, bigger pump.. and so on)

Can I obtain a crossmember from Bowtie Overdrives and still use a non Corvette transmission. And also obtain the servo to allow the proper WOT?

Shark, depending on your fabrication abilities, and or your buddy's welding abilitites, you can make your own adaptor for the tranny tailshaft from any p/u or car....like I did, but in fact, later thinking seems to indicate a 200 4r is a better tranny for our cars...and I am sorry I didn't use that one instead....
they came in Monte Carlo's etc...

MrVette...
Could you narrow it down to what year Monte Carlos?? And also.. in your opinion could you tell much difference in the first gear ratios between the two?? I was thinking I would like the ratio of the 700 compared to my 350 and doesn't the 200's first gear match closely to the 350??

1988 through 1992. (My 700R4 came out of a '92 Chevy truck)
'88 and up were more durable. '93 and up are computer controlled (4L60E). If you find one set up with an electronic speed sensor, conversion to mechanical speedometer output is easy and inexpensive.

When I did my changeover about 6 years ago, I went with the 700 as it was in the C4, and figgered since it would bolt up, it was the thing to do, I knew of the 200's existance, but never knew it bolted up to a 350 chebby....
I think the gear ratios are much better with a 200 unless you have a very mild rear....308 or less.... so yes the ratios are nearly identical to a 350 thm except for the .7 overdrive....which is about perfect....most sharks came with 336 or similar gears...like mine, and my first gear is about useless,....
From everything written about guys comparing the two trannies here on this forum over the years, I have to admit the concensus is correct, and go with the flow.....when/if my 700 goes out again....I'll scrap it, and put in a 200, and get over with it....
the 200 also is smaller, lighter, and stronger, and shorter, does NOT require cutting the driveshaft either....as well as matches the 350 tail shaft mounts...
MUCHO easier and less dinero too boot....
