Default Is this Bubba?

This may be Bubba.........but what do you think about removing the filter sock from the gas tank, and installing an in line filter between the tank and the pump?

It would only be bubba if you hooked the the filter up with garden hose and bailing wire. A properly installed inline filter is an enhancement, not a bubba fix.

Yes, this is definite Bubba. The sock is there to keep out big chunks of stuff from entering the line and clogging it. A filter downstream is too little, too late.

That pickup sock is there for a reason. And that's to keep large particles out that may clog up the line or cause pump failure. :smash:

I was just dreading the thought of dropping the tank to replace the sock. I was just looking for a reaonable alternative. Found out I could take the fuel fill door out and get it out the top. :hurray: (BTW this is on my 78, not the 68)

I have replaced the sock, and am going to replace all the rubber hoses and blow out the feed line.

Thanks for the input!!

I am so excited! After a year of chasing a problem I finally have it fixed.

My problem.........WOT through 1st, 2nd and into third when it shifted into third it would lay down. Changed fuel pump twice, cap and rotor, rebuilt carb, new plugs and wires.

My next project was to deal with the sock in the tank. I pulled the metering unit out and there was no sock. Figured this was going to be another waste of time. I did install a new sock, blew out the feed line (didn't seem to get anything out of it), and replaced the rubber hoses connecting the metering unit to the steel lines. PROBLEM SOLVED. What a surprise!

I am thinking the hose on the feed line was bad, and I was sucking air.

WOW, I am fired up! BUBBA HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

Call me bubba cuz it is working fine for me. Just don't drop any big chunks in it.

As long as you have the in-line as close to the tank as you can, and definately ahead of the pump it should serve the same purpose. Shouldn't it?

It may be more of an issue on other years, but the 78 has a bladder in the tank. Looked real clean in there.........no big chunks. :D

it is stuck on the end of the fuel sending unit. It is at the lower left end of this pic:

and if you had no sock, you could have some crud sucked into your fuel line and it could plug up the fuel line before it got to the filter, so no, an inline filter would not perform the same function as the sock. :) MJ
