OK I rebuilt mycarb now to tune it
OK I rebuilt the carb and the problems of backfiring and no power are solved.
Now I cant get it too idle except at high RPMs(2000ish)
My secondary floats are dumping fuel out of the sight hole, didnt mess with the primary floats. Not quite sure on how to tune it. Do I need to lower my floats into the fuel or out of it?
How far out do I need the idle screws?
Anybody got some good text docs on how to tune it?

My suggestions is to go to a local book store and pic up a book that covers your carb which I am guessing is a Holley. Lars' paper nice but having a book that goes into further detail on how evething works with pics is very nice.

I thought the link on Lars page was VERY useful as well.

Sounds like the idel ciruit is way to lean or obstructed. Once warm, drop the idel below 2000, then lightly pump the gas. This will make the accelerator pump squirt gas into the carb. If that helps keep it alive, your not getting enough gas out of your idle circuit. It that kills it, your idel circuit may be way to rich, but to be honest, if it was that rich, you would probably see lots of black smoke out of the tailpipes. Also, you may want to work the linkage with your hand and observe the carb to make sure your accelerator pump is working correctly.

I adjusted the floats, and turned the idle mixture screws out to like 5 turns out on both sides with no effect. The accelerator pump is working cause I saw it quirt the gas in there.
How do I find an obstruction in the idle system and not have to buy another 30-50 dollar gasket kit?

Next time you buy gaskets get the reusable ones, they are blue. Had the same problem with a 750 dp and I tore mine down then used compressed air to blow out all the passeges, that cured it.

Apparently when I rebuilt it, I used the wrong gasket between the throttle base and the main body -- I had 4 to choose from. So I switched it with the correct one and now the vette is running like a raped ape

I did the same thing with my q-jet last week. When I removed it, there was a metal gasket on top of the intake gasket. I didn't put it back when I put the reassembled carb back on. Wouldn't idle unless the idle screws were waaaayyy out, and then it missed a lot. Finally pulled the carb, put the metal gasket back, and it started right up and idles great.
