Previously, my operating temp was 209 degrees. Now it is 165-170 degrees.
Does that mean the themostadt is not even kicking in and that the water pump is solely responsibile for the lower temp?

1. You temperature gauge is inaccurate. They all are.
2. The thermostat has nothing to do with overall temperature. Except for minimum operating temperature.
3. A new water pump can reduce temps significantly if the old unit was a piece of junk.
4. 165-170 degrees would be too COOL an operating temperature.

Well it must have been inaccurate at 209 as well, and I guess, continues to be inaccurate at 165-170.
But even with all these inaccurate guage readings it still appears I have reduced the operating temp by 40 degrees or so.
So, what you make of this puzzle?

My car starts running well around 180 degrees. I woulde think the water pump maybe helping the car. Was there a problem with the old one? I am sure a flush and fill did not hurt it either what ratio water to antifreeze did you add when filling. I would think you need very little anitfreeze down there Maybe 20/80

It's one of these two possibilities.
1-The coolant is getting past the t-stat. Constant circulation within the engine alone won't sustain 170 degrees for long. You have a 160 t-stat and it's performing correctly.
2- You have a 180 t-stat working correctly and your temp gauge is reading low by 15- 20 degrees.
