I saw at the Chevy dealer today.... two unloved, unwanted, unsold
50th anniversary 6spd convertibles... :( Part of the problem was the $57 and $58k sticker. (one had CD player, otherwise identical) Wonder what they will eventually go for. MJ

Re: I saw at the Chevy dealer today.... two unloved, unwanted, unsold (MNJack)
at the dealership i work at there's been 1 vert, 1 hardtop and 1 zo6 in the showroom that have just been sitting around for about 4 months now.
It's probably just local economics, but from what i've noticed we only sell like 1 vette every 2 months maybe, and thats on a good year.

I would love to own a new vette.. but sheesh..who can afford the 50k+ price tags? What ever happened to the original concept of the vette as a perfromance car the average guy can afford? I mean I make decent money...($70+/yr), but I can in no way afford that for a car payment!
They need to get a little real with car pricing..each year they go into the stratosphere a little more... greedy bastards! :cuss

Even seems like dealers putting them on eBay can barely get any bids??? Can you say overpriced? Can you say weak economy? Can you say lack of interest? Can you say market FLOODED with Corvettes? Can you say people are waiting for the C6? Can you say we're happy with our C3s and really don't care what happens to C5s?

I wonder how much they are going to like them sitting on the lot now that the 04's are out?

it goes along with the general economy, no paying jobs, no vette sales....
simple......
since the vette is one of the few cars actually made in America still, even though it has lots of sub-assy's from offshore...it's expensive, and probably going to get more so as production numbers drop....
no more worthwhile jobs= no more customers....

A local dealer is offering '03s for $7K off MSRP. I think they had 7 in stock or something like that.
Same thing happened to the C3s and C4s near the end of their run . . . nobody wanted them because they knew something new was coming. :yesnod:

If I remember correctly a 1970 big block could be bought for about $5,500.00. Does anybody know what $5,500 would be in todays money value? In 1970 $5,500.00 was a lot of money for the average guy also. I agree 57k is a huge expense, then you have to add on insurance whick is also pretty pricey for a new Vette. Roger L. Gibbons

c-5's are really not very valuable especially once driven off the lot. I have rarely seen a car Depreciate so fast :nonod:

Re: I saw at the Chevy dealer today.... two unloved, unwanted, unsold (Alwyn678)
I've seen 03's in the auto-trader for $48K w/4k miles on them... I talked to a guy at a cruise in who just got a used 03, and he said the owner was asking $48k, but he only paid $45k! That's a $10k loss in less then a year!!
But your right.. once you add the insurance cost, not to mention the initial "new car" maint cost... it's too steep! :banghead:

they sell pretty fast at the dealership i work at. We still have 2 03's but i'm sure they will sell by the end of the month.
The dealership that said they are giving 7k of is probably lying unless it is a friend of yours, because theres not 7k in mark up,i.e. a lot of dealerships will say 7k -8k of but you have to pay for there 6k markup

Re: I saw at the Chevy dealer today.... two unloved, unwanted, unsold (munday)
My '69 had a sticker price of $6, 156. Assuming normal inflation (gotta take into account the Carter years ), you have to figure it would be ~$38-44k new today.
Anyone who is willing to pay sticker for any car is a bit crazy, but whatever. It's all in eye of the beholder, I guess.
When I bought my '02 Z06 back in Jan. '02, the economy (for car sales, at least) was better than it is right now. I still got it for $6500 under sticker. The dealership made some $$, and I think I got a darn good deal for the car.
Yes, $50k sticker prices are high, but when you compare the performance to anything else in its class... its an incredible deal. The only other new car out there that offers this type of "bang for the buck" performance would be the '03 SVT Cobra, and being a 4-seater, built on an archaic platform it is in a completely different class (although a very fast straight-line car when mildly modified).
The 50th Anny cars are marked up way too high in a sagging market, and they'll come way down before they move. :yesnod:

Re: I saw at the Chevy dealer today.... two unloved, unwanted, unsold (WA 2 FST)
There's not too many cars out there today that go for sticker price or higher.
When a dealer is faced with excess inventory cluttering the lot, they'll let them go, even if there isn't 7k of markup. They'll make up the difference in another deal. I'm no expert, but it just makes sense to cut your losses before you really get stuck with something that won't move. That's how I got my '99 Z/28 in 2000 for far far below sticker.
Wasn't it only a few years ago that there was a waiting list for Vettes?

Re: I saw at the Chevy dealer today.... two unloved, unwanted, unsold (pra4sun)
Remember, the 2 cars in question are 40th anniversary red verts. The 40th anniversary package is a $5k option. A vert costs a lot more than a coupe, so you end up with a sticker (and sticker shock) of $57k. The regular coupes have a much more reasonable MSRP. A factory CD player will cost you $800- $1000 in any car, or quite a bit more in a luxury car. MJ

I'm gonna have to disagree on that one. Right off GM's site.
