Default Any tips on cleaning the exterior of a carb?

I am reassembling the engine on the 79 and the carb looks like hell next to the nice clean motor.

Dissassemble it and soak it in carb cleaner?

I got all the grime off mine with Simple Green and a rag, but that doesn't make it "shine".

You could always have a shop plate it... but there's bucks right there.

I don't want to take it apart, but it is off of the engine.

Anyone?

Not taking it apart really limits your options, because you can't soak it or otherwise screw up the gaskets. Eastwood has carb paint, but there also I am not sure if they recommend using it on an assembled carb. MJ

I'm gonna try the wheel acid we have at the dealership to see if it will clean it up.

I was just talking to someone that told me to plug up all the inlets and soak it in tidy bowl toilet cleaner. Apparently, that is an old trick.

how do you plug all the inlets, some are as small as a pin head (idle mix slots, air bleeds)?

And some are huge. (Throttle venturi)

Any harsh cleanser that gets inside the carb will ruin it.

get a set of heavy, heavy rubber gloves, a parts cleaner brush, a big bowl or pot, Permatex carb cleaner, and start brushing the outside. When done, spray some disc brake cleaner to rinse the outside of the carb. You should have a clean looking piece when you're done.

Don't get any of the carb cleaner on your hands...nasty stuff, but it works wonders.

Hey george, who has the Permatex Carb Cleaner?

Steve, the only thing inside a carb I can think of that would be a problem is the floats. Gasoline is a solvent as well.

Yeah well, Discount and AutoZone don't have it. I will try Napa next. I was hoping to avoid driving around aimlessly. Doesn't look lke "any" auto parts store has it. (Permatex that is)

You used the Permatex? I may do that for mine when I get the chance.

No, couldn't find it. Used a couple different cans of generic carb cleaner.

Daaaaah.....my mistake, I used NAPA's carb cleaner, that's made by Permatex, but says NAPA on the can...sorry, I just realized.

The other thing I like to use (not sure how safe it is on carbs) is brake cleaner. It is good at removing grime since the cans spray really hard and have all kinds of cool chemicals in one can:D With carb cleaner, there's an added bonus that it seems to kill all kinds of insects nearly on contact, just don't tell the EPA:D
