Thinking of buying this 73-454, How much is reasonable?
Everything is original except for the paint
The highs:
Paint is new, Orange, and IMMACULATE! (was taken down to glass)
Undercarriage is perfect
Factory air (not verified to work)
400 Auto
Decent interior, minor wear with a hold in the leather seat
Power windows
PS
PB
Chrome is in good shape
Weatherstripping is new
Body is straight
No signs of body damage
Lows:
PS Gear box leaks, probably needs replacing
needs a tune up
not the original paint color
motor has 144k miles. Not sure about the internals.
Leather seat is ripped
Door skins are probably not original
He's asking between 16-18k

definitely tooooo much. Who knows what the right number is.. lot of variables. Check all the on-line reference guides and then plus/minus from there. Good luck...

What is is asking would be a good price if the "lows" were corrected. As is take the asking price and deduct what it would cost to correct the lows. The paint cannot be corrected (too new to redo) so you would have to decide if you could live with that. What was the original color?
A tune up is minor, but if the seller is serious, that is one of the first things to do to get a car ready to sell. Having the PS repaired can be only a couple of hundered. Redo of the interior can be from $1K to $3K depending upon what is done and who does it. The engine condition, you will have to be the judge of that.
Good luck.

If you find the car appealing to your own self (no-one else), then the price will be set by you-(the buyer), not him/her-(the seller). In other words, if you like the car, and can afford anywhere near his asking price, and understand the car and it's drawbacks----------you are in the drivers seat to DICKER!
So, without any further info provided, and based solely on the above, offer 13.5K----cash. He will accept your offer or counter-----do not go beyond 14K.
Remember, state your case/offer, and SHUT-UP! The next person whom speak's loses.
If this does not work out for you , let me know, I'll make him an offer he can't refuse. :D

The reason it isn't tuned up is because he doesn't ever drive it. It's not "technically" for sale. It's not listed. I only have a chance to buy it because it's a friend of a friend. This guy has lots of money and could care less about selling it, but if I put money in front of him he'd take it. It's that kind of mentality.
A 73 big block is nice, I love mine. Just make sure you can get it at a price that you can live with. Just remember, if you are going to use it as a driver, the great paint job will get chips and dings. Will it then be that great of a car a year or two from now? But if you are just going to show it, can you afford that expense to not use the car? Again it is your call.

Look at the current book for #3 cars which with interior etc this should fall into. Add for the +454 + A/C. That's a start. Now look real close at your cost to repair:
- PS ($250)
- Interior, carpet, seats, door panels ($1000-1500)
- Engine tune (144K you should do a compression check to assess condition)
- Look real hard at the front suspension ($300-500 to rebuild)
- Look hard at the rear suspension and the T-arms. ($1500 for everything)
Factor these into your bid price after a good check.

I've tried to buy cars from people who don't want to sell them and don't need the money. It can be a waste of time.
To answer your question, $13-14k is the zone. Less if the suspension and rear end need attention. Much less if the 144k engine is on its last legs.
Good luck.

If a perfct under carrage means all restored,(brakes, suspension) Then I think it should be worth 16 to 18k. A new flawless paint job , new weather stripping, good chrome and a big block , how could you go wrong? The engine could be rebuilt for less than 4k and it would be a monster.

Tough call, I would at least try to get the cost of an engine rebuild off the asking price. Even if it runs well, it must be getting a lot tired by now. I don't think the non-original color will hurt the value of this car.
