New to Forum. Using JB Weld on Headlamp Support?
I have a replacement headlamp assembly and I noticed that it has two small cracks in the front corner of the support frame. At first I thought I wouldn't be able to use it, or at the very least it would not last very long before breaking all the way through.
Do you think if I can get to clean aluminum around the crack that the JB Weld will hold up? I'd hate to have to buy another support.
I am trying to add my 1981 pic to my signature; hope it works.
Thanks,
Steve

Clean it up, rough up the metal with sandpaper to give the JB Weld something to adhere to and smooth it on. It has held many things. You have nothing to lose but the $5 for the product.

:iagree: If cleaned and applied properly it should hold for a long time. I once fixed radiator with that suff (very bubba :D ) and lasted longer than the car, 3 years. It was under pressure and heat and still managed to hold perfectly. So to put it on a bracket that only moves every once in a while then it should hold fine.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try.
I finally figured out what I did wrong with adding my pic.

Like the others said, you really don't have much to lose. I thought that metal on the headlight supports was pot metal, not aluminum (I could be wrong). If it's aluminum it could be welded.

it's some kind of poor cast aluminium I think. It looks as it has quite a bit of contaminations in it and the whole assembly isn't very strong. There IS liquid metal that will glue pot metal (if it's that), do a search on google.

:iagree:
Those headlamp assemblys are made of some not so strong aluminum. If the actual lid is cracked it will show up after you paint it, don't ask how I know.

If you want a permanent fix for this sort of stuff, check this place out. http://www.muggyweld.com/index2.html Check their videos out on welding pot metal, aluminum and cast iron, with their rods. Most aluminum and all pot metal can be mended with a propane torch. Their rods are sort of expensive, but they work.

I think you are right. It is not aluminum; rather pot metal. The cracks are not in the lid/top, so I think I will give the JB Weld a try. Not much to lose, I guess.
