CARB & INTAKE UNDER STOCK HOOD

Re: CARB & INTAKE UNDER STOCK HOOD (silver79)
I have a performer carb with a carter carb(same as edelbrock performer) with an edelbrock pro flow air cleaner and i have no issues, however if you are going to use the stock air cleaner setup you might run into problems but i dont know for sure.

Re: CARB & INTAKE UNDER STOCK HOOD (battsup)
I have a performer with a holley 750 sitting on top.. I had to get a drop down base for the air cleaner to run a 3" element in it. Otherwise, it would have been a 1" and still rub on the hood with the wingnut.

Re: CARB & INTAKE UNDER STOCK HOOD (silver79)
i am using an edelbrock 1406 carb on a performer intake and
the air clnr nut rubbed through the insulation above and almost
touches the hood.
wanted the RPM airgap but edelbrock emailed me and said the best
i could do on a 78 was the performer. (or get out the sawsall :nono: )

Re: CARB & INTAKE UNDER STOCK HOOD (ED DINAPOLI)
Dear ED,
Thanks for your input. I have a 74 with an L48, cast iron manifold and was unsure which is the best aftermarket manifold to use. Then my August HOT ROD magazine arrived and I read the article on the manifolds. It appears that both the Performer RPM and Performer AIR GAP are both 7 1/4 inches high, while the base Performer measures just over 7 inches high. Now, I don't know the height of a STANDARD GM manifold, but imagine that it would be similar to the base Performer. So, if a Performer RPM will fit under the bonnet, then a Performer AIR GAP should too. Has anyone out there actually measured any manifolds and compiled a table of heights? It would be a good idea if somebody would, as we would all benefit from it.

I thought I remember someone saying on here that an Edelbrock Performer RPM will fit using the stock air cleaner assembly for a 74, you just can't use the cowl lip that fits on the dual snorkle base. Since I have this setup and will be putting my hood on shortly I will let people know....from the eyeball it looks like it will fit.

in the left column click on 'intake manifolds' then on 'Checking for hood clearance'.

I did not indicate which air cleaner I was using. I am using a GM replacemnt unit with a 3 inch K&N element.

I have a Performer Vortec and stock Quadrajet and the stock hood will not close over the stock air cleaner. Put a little chrome triangle shaped air cleaner on it and it works fine.
