Is It Possible To Take A Dipstick Apart?
How does the handle fasten to the stick? Does it come off?

Oil. I have bought a couple of chrome dipsticks overtime, but they are always too short. So, thought I could just switch the chome handle.
The chrome dipstick is 2 1/2 inches shorter than the original one; yet they are for a 350 SB.

Typically these chrome dress-up parts are configured for a single "catch-all" application. Your '72 originally used a different configuration oil pan that required the longer dipstick. You could send your original dipstick off to have the handle rechromed if you're set on having pretty chrome covering as much real estate under the hood as possible. Or just buy the chrome dipstick to leave in the motor, and carry the functional one around to use when you actually want to check the oil.

I don't know about taking the handle off, but, something has chewed the bottom end off of 2 dipsticks in the oil pan of my Vette :banghead: I have cut a portion of the splash tray away and the dipstick still gets in the wrong place and ends up on the "short end". Anyone else have this happen or have any suggestions to fix the problem? Sure makes checking the oil a challenge. . . .

Actually, I should have more important things to be doing; but I just don't. :skep:
