I think I am retiring the 78 from Drag Racing
Fridays results were not good. I broke several things including the tranny and something in the motor. Lose 4 gear all together, 1st is jumping shifting all over the place, I developed a naste miss, and my times were not up to par.
On the first run I lost a cylinder and ran a 10.1, it just didn't get much better. 10.1 is the worse time the car has ever run since I owned it. Not sure what is going on with the motor. I played with the timing and thought I repaired the miss, but it just bandaged the problem.
Best run of the night was a 8.9 with a 2.0 60ft time. :smash: , but lost 4 gear on the way home.
Pulled the plugs last night and they are brown and white. I think I my either have either a bent push rod, burnt valve, or very bad vacuum leak. As far as the tranny, I don't think it is big deal. Maybe some trash in the valvebody. Worse case a blown convertor.
Anyway, I think I am going to tighten up the motor with a smoother roller cam and rockers. The jury is still out.

Leave the Vette for cruising buy a $2000 Rustang and drop a SBC 406 in it for drag racing ( that's what I want to do anyway ) :D

Find out what's wrong first!:) If it's got T!T's or Tires your going to have problems with it. :D I've also got depressed for a short period of time then I decided to use better parts that can handle the load.
I know  It cut's into the bud moneysometimes!

Are we talking 1/8th mile or 1/4?
I would guess 1/8th.... with 100% certainty.. He would need about 1.3 60ft to go 8.9 in the 1/4 mile... not to mention 1100 hp! :) and a parachute! MJ

I've never figured out why there are 1/8 mile drag strips in the first place. Were they too cheap to buy the extra 1/8 mile of cow pasture in the boondocks that no one wants? Plus, it just takes out the top end rush of getting nipped in the lights by a 19 second Izuzu pickup. At least at a 1/4 mile strip you can stop down at the end on the return road and think up a good story what happened. 1/8th mile just doesn't give ya time. :D

Insurance rates are probably way lower though:)
If you had the choice between a 1/8 and nothing... I would take the 1/8 :)

Both are fun!:) I only do 9.2 seconds on street tires. You have to be right on the dial in every time and a good light. The 1/4th is just another 4 seconds of doing nothing.

I grew-up 1/4-mile racing. When the local S.B.D. (short, bumpy, and dark) Drag-O-Way got too run-down, I towed 2 hours outta town to a small 1/8-mile strip. Believe me; 1/8-mile racing will make you a MUCH BETTER racer; it takes 660 un-neccesary feet outta the equation, less breakage (yours AND others'), and you get done before the sun comes up, too...

Re: I think I am retiring the 78 from Drag Racing (Glensgages)
This is a board of discussion and I agree that 1/8th mile drag racing is intensive because that's where most of drag racing is won or lost cutting a good like and hitting all the shift points(either the 1/8 or 1/4). But, the last 1/8 is like a chess match either trying to make up for a bad lite and hopefully dump your competitor in the lights and have them run under their index or on the reverse side just staying ahead of your competitor knowing you cut a better light than they did. If you have never done it, go spend part of your day down at the end of the track at the finish line and watch what happens. The good drag racers know where their competitor is. It's an art to watch.

I use the the 1/8 mile for test/tune. It's short, safe, and no one cares if you shut it down early. Great place to practice your skills. Denton just extended their track to allow for fast et cars. It is as smooth as a babys behin.. :D
As far as being depressed about breaking the car. Nah, it's always going to break. Just another reason to upgrade to better parts and dream about that perfect combo.
