396 -> 454
Can a crank from a 454 be fitted in a 396 block and what has to be done?My friend has a 396 and was wondering.He just got beat last night by a Audi Quattro(the rally model) in his Nova 69 and want more torque.. :lol: :cheers:

I'm not sure about the crank question -- but if your friend has already gone the intake-carb-headers route and all is working properly ----I would suggest he take a look at his gearing -- a lower speed rear end might give him more bottom end to stay ahead of that Audi -- with less cash outlay than trying to stroke his 396.

I don't know if it will fit or not but the 396 and 427 share the same crank, the mains, rod bearings and rods are the same. The 427 will accept a 454 crank so by deduction the 454 crank should fit but.
The 396 bore is about 1/4 inch smaller then the 427/454 so you could never get a 454 from a 396.

I just read in a big block book that some of the 396 blocks will need some minor grinding for the crank and rods to clear. It will fit but I'd check the clearance.

If I did the math right, he'll end up with 427.6 ci, assuming a stroke of 4.00" and a bore of 4.125 ( later 402 ci 396) and 421.6 ci with 4.096 bore of the original 396. A minor difference.
