I need a carb Guru troubleshooter
I went to a show yesterday, (yes I got a trophy) The car started hard both in the morning and coming home. It ran alright on the way there but when I left the show I kicked it down a little and the car fell on it's face. I had to feather the gas pedal to keep it going. I drove it home (about 40 miles this way)
It would idle OK and if I eased the gas it would get up to 25-35mph fairly good. If I gave it too much gas too quick it would act like it was starving for gas.
I'm thinking either a stuck float or dirt.
The car has 53000 miles and is an original L48/auto
I only have about 300-400 miles on it since:
new:
cap & rotor
plugs
fuel filter
carb rebuild
(Had problems then but took it to a friend who is a certified mechanic and he set it for me and ran good up to now)

Re: I need a carb Guru troubleshooter (guppie)
Even tho you've had the carb recently rebuilt, my first stab would be the accelerator pump. Sounds like you're not getting enough fuel on accel. With the engine off, take a small screw driver and depress the pump plunger while watching in the throat of the carb. You should see a steady stream of fuel from the nozzles.
If this is the prob, it can be replaced.
Good Luck :chevy

I have a similar problem with my car, appears to starve for gas. I did as you suggested and notice only one side is putting out a steady stream of fuel. What is the problem and what type of fix is called for?? 1978 all stock for now..
thanks

You may also want to check all of your inline fuel filters. When these guys get dirty, fuel does't flow the way it should.

I don't like hearing that Shawn, I hope mine lasts a little longer than that.
I hope your 2nd one lasts a lot longer. Good luck with it.
My in-line filter by the way was changed within the last few hundred miles.

Make sure that when you replace a fuel pump you use molded "s" hoses. If you use a non-molded hose it will kink really easily and restricting fuel flow.

Re: I need a carb Guru troubleshooter (dman535)
I had changed all of my filters before installing that$#$$$$%% pump. I should have done a vac test before installing it. In todays adventure you can be darn sure I'll test before the install. Anyway thanks for all the help, and molded hoses it shall be.
