Default Brake Problem...

If I drive my '68 after it was sitting for a few hours... My brake pedal goes all the way to the floor... and the car is hardly breaking... After pumping the brake a few times and driving the car.. the brakes operates normally again..
The master cylinder is full and doesn't lose fluid... Could it be that my master cylinder is bad??

Hi

Who needs brakes ?

Try to bleed them. If you find air in them, well the surge starts.
Are you still operating the middle age lip seal caliper pistons ?

I have stainless steel o-ring calipers and they aren't leaking.. I don't think that the calipers are the problem... I'm 90% sure that it's the master cylinder...

I would go through the proper bleeding sequence first. It was pointed out here earlier in the week.

So: left rear, right rear, left front, right front.

BTW, I am changing master cylinders next week, but only because I am becoming a chrome freak!

I'm going to change the master cylinder anyway because it's cheap and not too much extra work when bleeding the brakes...

I've always been told to start at the farthest from the master cylinder and work towards the closest. RR, LR, RF and LF.

Is there some reason behind the other sequence?

Olivier,
Sounds like a master cylinder to me. I agree it's easier to replace it.

I think y'all are both talking about the same wheels just refering to different ends of the car. One is looking at it from rear, the other from front.

Try this, (pass) PR, DR, PF, DF.

I had a problem where I would get soft pedal, and when re "stabbing" would be firm again. I cahsed this one for a year. I finally determiend it was the master cylinder. Because I wnated to keep my original master, I bought a rebuild kit ($32) and rebuilt it. I followed the instructions in the GM manaul; cleaned all surfaces, reinstalled and bled. My brakes have never felt so good. Hard; no fad or pull, incrediable! :smash: :smash: :smash: :hurray:

I do not know about your calipers, but mine have bleeders on the top and bottom. Both of them need to be bleed to remove any air in the caliper.

I have stainless steel o-ring calipers and they are only 2 years/15000 miles old... I don't think that I have air in the system.... I'm 99% sure that it's the Master Cylinder....

Then just replace it already.

Grandsport - it sounds to me like the seals in your master cylinder are going bad. Once you pump 'em a few times they swell a bit and you've got pressure again. That would explain your situation.

I don't disagree with the bleed suggestions, but it sounds like you are pretty sure it's not calipers or air in the lines. That being the case, MC would be the next logical culprit.

I will very likely bleed the brakes when installing the new master cylinder...
