Power Steering Fluid check......???
Ok... anyone know a good tip for an easy way to check the power steering fluid? My cap is about 1.5" from the bottom of the alternator... (who's the brain child that designed that layout??? :mad )
Anyway... any ideas or tips would be GREATLY appreciated! :skep:

I have the same problem. I've been thinking about buying this rod end alt strut:

And MAKING it fit to raise the alt some. Steve Straus has Jegs part #655-20135. Its a nice lookin setup and it might give the clearance but then there's the PS bracket to worry about. But, for now, I have to take off the alt belt and raise the alt to check PS fluid.

Nope - sits right below the alternator. Guess fill er up and if no leaks, wait till the alternator needs to come out. And they paid these guys big bucks to design???

That bracket ( http://www.speeddirect.com/Products/...h_linkage.html )appears to be for a small block only. Big block alternator brackets are entirely different. The power steering cap on a stock C3 big block is buried under the alternator and is tilted. My 70 LS5/454 power steering cap is very hard to reach as well.. but it can be done. Just takes a few finger/wrist contortions and some practice. I don't know of any "simple" fix. Just have to live with it I guess.
I use a transmission fluid funnel (long skinny nose) to fill or top off the fluid when necessary.

BTW, don't blame us engineers at Saginaw for the difficulty. We just designed and made the pumps, Chevrolet packaged the accessory drive, (i.e. locations for the PS pump, alternator, AIR pump, AC compressor, and all the brackets and belts.)
Sorry,

I thought about going to a larger belt on the ps pump on my 78. You couldn't go much larger maybe .5"?? Maybe .5" larger on the pump and .5" smaller on the alternator.
I don't know if that is even feasible...........it was just thought. I can check mine. I have to line the dip stick up so it is in the notch the cap locks into and pull.
The 68 will have power rack and pinion (Steeroids) this weekend hopefully!
