Default Big Block Oil Slinger, needed or not?

Guys,

I had a valve guide break and suck down in my intake and land on top of my piston last month. Ended up taking out 2 pistons, heads, and lots of my labor. OUCH, that hurts only having around 2 thousand miles on the engine. Root Cause, right valve springs to match the cam, but not shimmed properly for proper spring tension (per my machine shop). The machine shop said with my lift, I should have around 120-130 lbs of spring pressure, not the 90 I had. Well, that is history, now on with the rebuild.

Back to my posting question, is the oil slinger needed or not in front of the timing gear on the crank? It never had it when I rebuilt it. If it is needed, is this a dealer item? Your thoughts please...

I've never seen an oil slinger on a BBC. Fords and others use them, but not Chevy.

I've never seen an oil slinger on a BBC. Fords and others use them, but not Chevy.
