Default OT - What should I buy for a back up cruiser during painting...

I'm guessing that it is going to take me about one or two years to paint my vette. i.e. the expense of bumpers, emblems, plastic lens, etc. I want to do it right, so I will be taking my time.

My question is: What do I buy for a low budget cruiser during the paint job.
Last 70's Camaro with a 4 speed
5.0 Mustang vert
80's SS Monti Carlo

What else is out there for a $1000 or so, that would be fun to drive on the weekends.
:D

I'm very fond of the 70 camaro, so that gets my vote.

'vertable vette? :yesnod:

Ok so it'd be a real snazzy rc car at 1k! :jester

I'd go 70's camaro and stiffen up the suspension for a corner carver!

Problem is that the cars you list will be junk at your $1k price point. Personally I would look at a 80's full size sedan. You can get something in nice shape for $1500 and it will have a huge trunk to haul stuff. My spare car is a 83 Cadillac DeVille I got for free. Still runs like new, seats 6, enough trunk space for 5 Hoffas and gets 17mpg city, 25 freeway.

Another good candidate is the Caprice. Solid car and cheap.

Markus, Not a daily driver. I already have a 2002 F-150. Just a fun car to crush gears in and easy to fix. i.e. cheap picky parts. :yesnod:

I would get a third gen F-body (camaro, firebird). They are new enough to be reliable but are still fast and fun. They're also dirt cheap.

:withstupid:
Third-gens are everywhere and are damn cheap. Stock, they're dogs, but that can be fixed for just a few bucks. (See CHP's "My Generation" buildup from last fall/spring). Beware: the 4 speed only came with the 305. All of the 350s got automatics.

My old (4th gen) '95 Z28 6 speed convertible is for sale again. The kid who bought it from me bought a '99 SS, so the old Z28 is for sale. He'll probably take $8500. Mystic Teal with black leather, every available option, ~115k mi.

I don't know how the used car market is where you live but in San Antonio $1,000 will get you a very marginal beater that you wouldn't drive much beyond walking distance from home.

77-81 Trans Am, thats my substitute cruiser. Everytime the vette breaks down I switch the plates over and BOOM I'm Bert Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit.

Sure, but where are going to find one for $1k that has even a remote chance of moving under its own power?

true, but if you want a cruiser you have to spend more than $1000, you will need at least $1800 or more.

Just for referrence, there is a dealer down the road from my work that has a 76ish Z28 4 speed for $1000 and a primered 81 ss Monti Carlo with new motor for $1000. The motor in the monty has been updated to a 350. I saw a 85ish GTA next to the road for $1400. The deals are out there, it's just takes talking to the lot guys to find them. Most of these auction cars are worth more in parts, so they never make the lots.

I'll try to take some pics for review this week, but I'm off to Houston.
