Default Went for a ride tonight... car died. Help

Took the 69 out tonight after working on the headlights for the last 10 days. Everything was running fine, I came to a stop sign the car almost stalled, gave it some gas went about 100 yards and she died. I looked and saw the fuel filter was bone dry, so I assume I either have a bad fuel pump or a bad sending unit, maybe both. After about 15 minutes I was able to get the car restarted and made it home with out any more problems. Any thoughts on what to look for and if I need a fuel pump what kind do you reccomend.

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

Sorry to here about your problem. At least your car is on the road, mine is in pieces still and I'm running out of time before school. How did you make out with that fiberglass repair? By the way this is Kevin, the punk kid with the white vette, (I didn't know if you knew I was on the forum or not).

Thanks,
Kevin

I would pull the hose that goes from the frame fuel line to the pump and make sure you got fuel there. Pour a quart out just to make sure. This hose is known for kinking, and by checking here you get an idea of everything on back. If all is good try the pump.

I think you can unhook the fuel line from the carb and hook a gauge on it to check the fuel pressure. That should tell you if you have a bad pump or not. The car should run long enough to get a fuel pressure reading, even with the line unhooked. I'm not sure about that, but I think that's how you would test that. Otherwise you would have to make a fitting to go between the carb and line that you can hook a gauge onto in line. If you have a cartridge type fuel filter with no bypass function you should probably change that first.

IF the fuel tank is not vented enough, it can actually stop a fuel pump....

sometimes....leave cap off and see....
