HELP!!! How do I wire my starter?
I have a 73 L-82, 4 spd
I'm ready to start the motor, but I forgot to lable my wires.
I know the ground (-) comes through the block, the positive (+) comes directly from the battery.
The problem I am having, is how to wire the solenoid. I have three lugs on the solenoid, the big lug is for the (+) no problem, and two smaller lugs labeled with an "R" and an "S".
My wires appear to be the same color, what is the polarity of the two terminals? Does polarity matter?
Thanks, Steve.

Re: HELP!!! How do I wire my starter? (snb73)
I figured it out;
"R" To the pos(+) side of the ignition coil, 20 guage wire
"S" From the Ignition switch, 12 guage wire
Thanks, Steve.

Can you believe that these cars are that "complicated" to connect - no wonder the Toyotas and Hondas took over the world.

Ever trace *** wiring??? same all over, really, nothing to it, once you understand electricals/elecrtonic....
ONE thing to watch is there is most likely a black wire with a 3/8 diamter loop on it, and that wire is about 10 gauge, and does NOT go on the positive battery post, one of GM's little wiring gaffs waiting to mess you up....
it supposed to go to engine ground/bellhousing or starter bolt.....
it's the ground for heater relay, wiper motor, and the heater blower....

I knew I would have to defend that statement...
Yes, I know were talking 30-year old cars here, and yes, I know were splitting hairs on a mechanics skill and familairty with the installation, and what I'm pointing out is that the Toyotas and Hondas went to the plastic modular plug for connecting the wiring harness to the starter first - then the big three followed suit. To the amature mechanic - the plug-in connector is just easier and more user friendly.
Looking back on that era - it was probably an American engineer that showed the Japanese how to do it the better way - he knew it all along - but couldn't implement it on the american car models at that time because businessmen choose not to change things if they don't have too. Of course we all know how those business decisions turned out.
It just means that we have to have one fraction more diligence (like drawing a picture of the wires) when doing work on these type of cars.

I used to just drop pull the starter and leave it wired then set it on the frame but just switched to the quick disconnect. The retaining clip doesn't fit on my Summit starter's cylinoid but I just zip tied it out of the way.

Really?
I thought the clutch wire goes to the "S" and the battery and two red wires (ignition and coil) go to the large post in the center. Of course the ground wire goes to ground.
I don't know if I am right, but it works. My old starter had a sticker that said not to hook anything up to the "R" terminal.

S is from your ignition switch- SOLENOID
+ is the 12V from the battery
R connects internally to + during cranking (while solenoid is engauged) I can't imagine why anyone would use it for anything. Maybe a light on your dash that says, "Engine is cranking and I'm a moron becuase i can't hear it and I need a dummy light"
