Who Has Classic Or Antique Plates On Their Corvette?
I had a personalized plate from my 01 Corvette and transfered it onto my 75. State Farm Ins Co told me if I had a classic or antique tag on the car the insurance would be 2/3 less. So I got a classic tag.
What do you have?

Re: Who Has Classic Or Antique Plates On Their Corvette? (Corvette ED)
I live in Wisconsin and I have Collector plates on my car. I did it because I had to pass emmisions testing the year I got the plates and I never have to have it tested again. That way I can mess with the engine and not worry about not being able to register the car because of a bad emmisions check.
I am not aware that my insurance company (Farmers Insurance) will give better rates.
Anybody out there have more info on this kind of stuff.

State Farm, as mentioned above, does have good rates for classic cars. The stipulation is that you have to have another daily driver insured with them in order for them to grant you a classic policy. I have discovered that their classic rates are far cheaper than any other company I've asked. Not just a little cheaper either, shockingly cheaper, which leads me to believe that there's a lot of gouging going on with other companies.
I have Colorado classic plates on my 68 Corvette as well as my 68 Firebird. You only have to pass a less-stringent smog test, however, it is not the smog test from the era, it is the previous sniffer test that Colorado used to use on all the cars before going to the dynomometer method. When I had the 327 in the car, the rings were bad on the #1 cylinder and the carb was way out of tune. I had to pretty much detune the engine even further to pass emissions, and then retune it roughly just to drive it back home. However, I require no further tests and can make any modifications I want, as long as I get the 5 year classic plates. With those plates, there are unfortunately no provisions for customized plates.
Colorado is considering legislation to use roadside sniffers to measure polution, and that would snare any of these older classic cars. Then you have the choice to return it back to emissions compliability, or "sell" it to the crusher for $1000. I hope it doesn't pass, because it seems to me that would effectively reverse the classic plate concept currently in force.
Politicians can be such idiots, ever notice that?

My 68 and 72 carry a vintage tag, because once you have them. Thats the last tag you ever pay for here in Ala.

Antique.
No inspection.
No annual plate fee.
2500 mile a year limit.
Drive to events/shows/repairs and limited "pleasure" driving.
I have to shop around for insurance though. Geico doesn't discount antique at all under their normal policy. I've been told by Geico and State Farm that they won't insure it as antique with an under 18 driver in the house (that applies to me for another year).

Ed, I live in York Pa. I put Classic tags on my 78 and my insurance dropped from about $500 a year to about $160 a year. I don't know how old you are, or if it makes a difference, but I'm 55. I've had the car for 15 years and I've been with the same insurance co. for about 30 years.

I had a 01 Corvette with State Farm and was paying $900 a year. The 75 convertible was $600 a year with my personalized plate. I got a classic tag and insured it for $20,000 and the insurance is $200 a year.
My PA tag was Corvete and I wanted to use it on the 75. I will keep the tag and use it on another C5.

I keep hearing that State Farm has a price break for classic cars. That is news to me. I tried and the only break you get is the extra charge for a high performance vehicle (79 L-48 high performance?) I have one car with JCTaylor and another with Sneed Robinson and Gerber.

Ontario has a "year of manufacture" plate program. So these...
...are going on this.

Texas has a "year of manufacture" plate program too. It's fifty bucks for 5 years, and I don't have to go to inspection anymore. However, you're not supposed to use it as a regular driver, or leave it unattended.

Jeff,
As you can see below there are no restrictions in the Ontario program.

1. Classic or Antique plates
2. Appraisal for the car
3. Agent takes photos of the car.

I'm keeping mine under regular insurnace and registration. The antique restrictions are way too limited for me. I'd sell my car if I put less than 2500 miles on it per year.

Re: Who Has Classic Or Antique Plates On Their Corvette? (BeaterShark)
Going the same way as BeaterShark with the '71. Registering the vette with '71 plates and as a classic seems best. And I'll add this one on to insurance at Hagerty along with the '74.
'71 Black Coupe - 454CI/365HP, Muncie 4-Spd
'74 Red Vert - AR 355CI/427HP, Auto
