Sure, Abandon power antenna. Disconnect the 12V power and ground from rear window defroster and cut and re-connect (solder) center wire of radio antenna wire to defroster. Connect antenna ground to frame. You'll have the best antenna you can get.

Yeah, had it done at Circuit City, including new antenna, for a reasonable price. Can't imagine why one would do it themselves when others will do it that have experience. Took about 1 hour or less. Very quality installation also. All connections sealed.

I did it without removing the muffler on my '79. I tried to remove the muffler but couldn't get it to budge. I cut the C clamp off the pipe, soaked in commercial grade knock-er-loose, and beat crap out of with a rubber mallett... no dice. The hardest part is getting the wires to go where you want them to.

I think it is possible. The first time I removed mine was when I painted it. I installed a rubber washer on it just because of your concerns. The second time no problem.

If all else fails, you can reach the antenna easily with the muffler still in place. Just remove the back bumper. I have mine off for painting and I am installing a power antenna that way.

I just did mine... it is a major PITA with the muffler on. I recommend taking it to a local shop, have them remove the muffler and put new clamps on.
Then you can take it home, remove the muffler, repair the antenna...
White wire is the hot one... carefull with it.

You might have to be a gynocologist to get that out with the muffler in. I'm not so I disconnected the exhaust from the header collector and removed the two muffler clamps holding the driver side exhaust. This dropped the muffler to the floor making access much easier. Now I'm struggling to find the harness to disconnect the power from the antenna.
