I just picked up a very low mile '72. Trouble is, at some point in the past, a previous owner must have driven though wet cement, because I have some concrete splashes "attached" to my wheel wells. It's not much, but what is there is very hard and very well attached.

Any ideas of how to get this stuff off ???

If it's only sand and cement paste you may be able to budge it with a 120 or 150 grit sandpaper......

If mechanical removal is causing too much damage, you could use a modified hydrochloric or phosphoric acid to soften the concrete matrix....this is what is used to clean splashes off concrete trucks and tower cranes.....there are many precautions too take with this method, so it's best to e-mail me if you can't budge it the old fashioned way.....

Yes.....hydrochloric is aggressive to metals....hence why I said "there are many precautions to take...."

The idea ISN'T to wash down the entire area with undiluted acid, but a more painstaking concentrated effort with a small brush; the acid being diluted to be able to loosen the surface of the concrete......

It's only really an idea that COULD be tried if mechanical removal isn't possible....I admit that it would be tricky....maybe I should try it on my car first :)

HCl will do very minimal damage to steel/iron in the short term. Make sure to wash everything down with a hose after. Overly concentrated, it may blur the clearcoat. Mix it 10 to one water to acid apply with a paint brush, and you will be fine. Also be careful not to breathe in the concentrated fumes, as in wear a paper mask and goggles if you really want to be a sissy. :D Hammer will remove the paint with the concrete IMHO. HCl is really not that dangerous. It won't really burn your hands with low exposure, it will sting any cuts, and dry them (your hands) out in concentrated form. Just rinse everything well and throw the brush away. Don't get any on your pecker either :D:cheers:

Actually I knew all that.......I'm just too conservative.......I didn't want to be responsible for someone trying to apply it with their pecker :)
